Emilia's POV
Elena and I are in our room getting ready for school. I hum to the music coming from the livingroom that Abuelita is listening to. Elena finishes tying her shoes and I finish my makeup.
We along with Alex walk into the kitchen for our breakfast, then sit at the dining table to eat. Abuelita stops Alex to give him his pressed pants.
"Good morning." Mom says finally coming out.
"Morning." Me and my
siblings greet her."You're amazing." Mom says as she takes her coffee from Abuelita.
"I know." Abuelita said.
"Mami, we already have crosses everywhere. Do we really need a pope on the fridge?" Mom asked noticing the picture on the side of the fridge.
"Oh, yes, because he is so inspiring. You walk in to get a yogurt, you see him. Hola, Papa. Puts a smile on your face." Abuelita said.
"Well, why don't you put the pope in your room and go smile in there?" Mom says, not liking the takeover of popes.
"I already have two popes in my room. Gracías very much." Abuelita says while chuckling.
"Oh. Oh, what's that, Papa? Are you lonely? You wanna be with your friends? Bueno, Juan Pablo y Benedicto te están esperando. Oye, mira eso. He looks happy there." Mom said, taking the photo off the fridge and placing it back in abuelita's room.
Abuelita just pulls out another picture placing it on the counter as mom walks to her room. Elena, Alex, and I laugh at her.
After breakfast we all roll out for the day.
School was going by as normal. In social studies there was a group project about immigration. We had a week to finish.
It was groups of three so I partnered with Elena and a girl named Carmen that sat on the other side of Elena.
She was a Latina as well. Rocking dark makeup and a bob with bangs and a few pink streaks.
We all get to talking. First about meeting at our place tonight to start research on the project. And then about other random stuff.
Today was a bus day to get home. We walk into the apartment and introduce Abuelita to Carmen. Abuelita of course gave us something to snack on while we work and we made our way to the bedroom.
"Yea.... I'm done for today." I say closing my laptop. The other two follow suit.
Again we get to talking for a bit. Carmen mentioned that her dad was getting really sick recently and they didn't know what was wrong.
"But your parents are undocumented. Where is he going for treatment?" Elena asks.
"Well my mom heard about doctor that will help, but they have to travel to him." Carmen says. That made me nervous because anytime you start dealing with checkpoints things can get risky.
"Well are you ok to stay alone? We don't mind you staying if you need us." I say, knowing her brothers moved out of state.
"No, it's only a few days, a week tops. We have groceries and they left money for other expenses I might need." She said surely. I give a nod and we change subjects.
Abuelita eventually calls us to dinner. As Abuelita is serving us Alex tells a story about Dylan falling in class, and me, Elena, and Carmen explain the social studies project.
We wait a bit for mom but she's running late. So we eat any way. After a while Carmen excused herself to the bathroom. And Schneider asks for a bit of seconds.
