Emilia's POV

Mom rode with EMT and Abuelita to the hospital. She texted Schneider that he could now bring us to the hospital.

We were all currently packing a bag preparing to spend the rest of the day at the hospital. As I zipped my bag I heard a knock on the front door and went to open it.

"Emi-" Josh started to say but I cut him off.

"Josh I really appreciate that you're trying to talk, and I want us to talk. I do. But... Abuelita is in the hospital right now and I don't have the energy to do this right now. Maybe tomorrow." I tell him immediately. He couldn't have come at a worse time.

"Of course. Tomorrow. Before you leave I want you to know that I love you and this isn't the end of us." He says with a reassuring nod. He pulls me in for a hug squeezing me tight and kissing the top of my head before leaving.

Soon we all gather into Schneider's car and head to the hospital.

"Hi." Mom says coming out of Abuelita's room. She gives each of us kids a kiss on the cheek.

"Hey, Pen, I got Lydia's stuff you asked for. Fuzzy Afghan she likes, picture of the Pope, picture of a different Pope, picture of your dad, picture of the family, picture of me with the family, picture of me by a waterfall. I'm just gonna keep talking 'cause I'm not good in crisis situations." Schneider rambles off nervously.

"This isn't a crisis. Everybody, the surgery went well. It prevented a stroke. Now she's in a medically-induced coma. We just have to wait for her to wake up." Mom explains calmly.

"She's gonna wake up, right?" Alex asked.

"Yes, of course. But you know this woman can't be rushed. My wedding started half an hour late because she needed to adjust her tiara. Yes, she wore a tiara to my wedding. She wanted to match a little figure of herself on the cake." Mom says jokingly. Trying to lighten the mood. I start to cry at the thought of Abuelita not being herself when she wakes up. Losing all her little quirks that make up her personality.

"No. Up, up, up, up. There will be no crying. Your abuelita hates everything about crying. Makes your eyes puffy, ruins your makeup, gives you mocos." Mom says lifting my chin gently. I nod sternly willing myself not to cry.

"She did once tell me tears are the pee-pee of the face." Alex confirms mom's statement.

"Good vibes only. That's what we're taking in there Okay?" Mom says and again I nod sadly.

"Good vibes." Elena says after a deep breath.

"Good vibes." Alex says next.

"Yeah, I'm gonna go." Schneider says handing the basket of items to Alex.

"Hi, Mami. Look who's here." Mom says talking to Abuelita as she leads us into the room.

"Alex, put this on her. Elena, Emilia Papi on the nightstand, popes on the dresser, and Schneider by the waterfall... in hazardous waste." Mom says handing us different things out the crate.

"What's up?" A male nurse says walking into the room.

"Oh, hi, Nurse Wally." Mom says politely before turning away and rolling her eyes.

"These your kids?" Nurse Wally asked.

"Oh, no. These are children I picked up outside, so I can show them what a coma looks like." Mom says sarcastically.

"Funny. Did you know that your mom is also a nurse? I do. She's only told me, like, a hundred times." Nurse Wally says clearly over mom being the overbearing daughter she is.
