Emilia's POV
It was a Sunday and honestly I planned for it to me a chill me day. No studying and no Josh even. Just time to myself.
"Mom please! I'm going to a movie." I hear Alex plead as I come out to the living room.
"Okay, papito. Here. Ten dollars." Mom says handing Alex some money.
"Oh, maybe I wasn't clear. I'm actually going to a movie in this century. It's in color and everything. A ticket costs $9.50." Alex says sarcastically.
"And I expect change." Mom snaps back.
"No, I feel your pain. I never had enough money to go to the movies with friends." Elena says trying to relate to Alex.
"Or enough friends to go to the movies with friends." He jokes.
"Oh, I know, why don't you pluck your one mustache hair, and you can get the kid price?" Elena snaps back.
"Why don't you pluck your 20 mustache hairs?" Alex says in return.
"Joke's on you, because each one of these hairs is a blow to the patriarchy." Elena says confidently like that would end the argument.
"Oh, you win." Alex says sarcastically.
"Come on, Mom. All my friends get way more cash from their parents." Alex says in comparison.
"What have I told you about comparing yourself to other people?" Mom asked.
"To always do it and make sure I'm better." Alex says bluntly.
"No, that's your abuelita." Mom says. She then goes on to talk about how she'lol take Alex to the movies and show him how to make the most of it on a budget.
Of course Alex protest but mom jokes about how it's like a little date with mom and she kisses and hugs him. While he tries to push her off. Me and Elena laugh from our spots at the dining table.
"Ay. ¡Ay, ay, ay, ay! ¡Ay! Oh... Well, don't make such a big deal of it. I'm fine." Abuelita says coming through the front door dramatically holding her arm. We all look at her in confusion seeing nothing visibly wrong.
"What happened?" Mom asked rushing over.
"She tripped on the sidewalk in front of the building and hurt her arm." Schneider says coming in a few steps behind her.
"I had to break my fall. Some people's faces are worth protecting. Papito and Emi know what I'm talking about." Abuelita says taking a seat in the couch.
"Abuelita, how did you trip?" I ask from my seat on the arm chair.
"That stupid sidewalk was broken. The roots of the tree pushed it up." Abuelita explains.
"Man, Mother Nature is turning on us. And after we've treated her so well." Schneider says seriously. We all shake our head at his obliviousness.
"Okay, I have figured out what to do about that tree." Abuelita says after we get her arm in a sling.
"Form a Million Abuelita March." I finish hopping off the couch excitedly.
"That adds up to, like, seven million hard candies." Schneider says playing his video game.
"No, no, no. I have something better than all that, that will cut through the red tape. Ha! Ha! Ha!" Abuelita says grabbing a machete from her room.
"Abuelita, be careful!" Elena and I both exclaim in horror.
"Oh, I know. I'm sorry. This is not my usual machete arm." Abuelita says nonchalantly.
"Okay. Let's just put this back in the... machete cozy?" Schneider says taking the weapon from her and putting it back in the sheath.
