Emilia's POV

"It's gonna be so good! It's gonna be amazing!" Elena exclaims as she comes through the door with her gamer friends. Josh and I sat at the dining table playing cards while mom and Abuelita were in the kitchen.

"Sounds like Alex is home." Abuelita says thoughtlessly.

"Oh no, Mami, that's Elena." Mom says coming out the kitchen.

"But I hear friends." Abuelita says in confusion. Causing me and Josh to chuckle.

"Hey Elena, who are all these peeps? What's up peeps?" Mom asked as all of Elena's friends sat around in the living room.

"Okay, so stop saying peeps." Elena says with a slight blush of embarrassment.

"Oh, 'cause Peeps are candy chicks used to celebrate Pagan fertility, and women are more than just baby-makers? I get it." Mom says trying to be woke.

"So maybe don't say anything. Anyway, this is the advocacy group I was telling you about. The Feminist Gamers of Echo Park. We've been hanging out online and this is our first meeting IRL." Elena explains.

"Welcome. What's everybody's name?" Mom asked the group.

"I'm Dani. My pronouns are she and her."

"I'm Syd, my pronouns are they and them."

"I'm Margaux, pronouns ze and zir." Everyone goes around introducing themselves.

"I'm Penelope, my thoughts are huh and what? Seriously, what is happening?" Mom says in confusion.

"Well mom, because some people are gender non-conforming, they have certain preferred pronouns." I explain from my dining seat next to her.

"Ah, I am Lydia. Pronounced Lee-dee-ah." Abuelita says not quite getting it.

"We're going downtown to protest the release of a new video game." Elena explains as she hands everyone their protest signs.

"Blood-splosion Six." Margaux reveals.

"Oh, I guess you think it's too violent, huh?" Mom asked.

"No, we love that part." Elena exclaims.

"When you create your avatar, there are only two gender non-binary characters." Dani starts to say.

"And the advertising strongly suggested there would be three." Syd continues.

"Okay, just, you know, be careful." Mom pleads.

"Don't worry, I'll be watching them." Abuelita says referring to Elena.

"Why would you be watching Syd?" Elena asked in confusion.

"I meant you." Abuelita explains.

"My pronoun is her." Elena corrects.

"I thought she was her." Abuelita says pointing to Dani.

"We're both her." Elena explains.

"When you say her, you mean them?" Mom jumps in pointing to both Dani and Elena.

"No, they is them. Stop making this confusing." Elena says pointing to Syd and putting an end to the confusing conversation. Josh and I share a chuckle as we get back to our game.

"Sup?" I hear alex greet as he comes in.

"Ay papito, you are barking up so many wrong trees." Abuelita says leading him to the kitchen.

"I love all the activism, but make sure it doesn't affect your homework. Because you need to--" mom starts to say.

"--Build up (your/my) transcripts and crush the PSATs!" Elena finishes with her.
