Emilia's POV
It had been almost a week since homecoming. Josh and I are at a weird in between stage. We haven't talked to each other in class or at lunch. We text each other good morning and good night but that's it. I've sent one text saying I miss you. I'm trying to not let it get to me. The few text we share sign enough that he still cares and that we're not technically broken up.
"Hey, here's to you guys. Tomorrow, you will be American citizens. This is my last night with a bunch of foreigners at my table." Mom toasts at dinner. Schneider's and Abuelita's citizen test was tomorrow so we're having a family dinner with Max to celebrate.
"Yep, finally ready to renounce free health care, economic prosperity, and diplomatic respect for... Oh, God, maybe I didn't think this through." Schneider starts to say but cuts himself off.
"And tomorrow I will be as American as El Pollo Loco. Salud." Abuelita says toasting again. We all follow after her.
"Hey, hey, hey, hey. You can't drink. You have a test tomorrow." Elena says stopping Abuelita from drinking her rum.
"Ay, please. In Cuba, we had the four "R" s. Reading, writing, 'rithmetic and rum." She counters with a heavy accent before taking her shot.
"Plus you only need to get 60% right to pass." Schneider says with a shrug.
"So basically, to become an American, you have to prove you're a D-minus student." I say with a disappointed tone.
"Yep, it's the same requirement as it is to become president. Want me to help you clean up?" Schneider says confidently even though it's incorrect.
"Nah, you're gonna be an American. Let the Latinos do it."Mom responds. She, Max, and Abuelita proceed to clear the dinner table while us kids go to the living room and Schneider leaves to his apartment.
"That's weird." Elena says after looking at her phone.
"What's wrong?" Alex asked.
"Syd just sent me a text. It's the dancing girl, salmon sushi and prayer hands." Elena explains.
"Okay, don't panic." Alex says dramatically.
"Why would I panic? Now I'm panicking." Elena exclaims back.
"Relax. When you get confusing emojis, you just need to send even more confusing emojis back until someone breaks. You're in an intense game of emoji chicken." Alex explains like that's the most logical thing ever.
"So should I send Syd a chicken?" Elena asked confused.
"Girl, are you cray?" Alex asked rhetorically.
"Alex stop scarring her. Just ask Syd what they meant." I tell them rolling my eyes.
"Okay, how about a ghost, a ski lift, and the Swedish flag? No, the Swiss flag." Alex suggests instead.
"But what does that mean?" Elena asked.
"Exactly." Alex says resting his case.
"Alex, you are the best. Thank you so much." Elena says hugging him. Elena then smiles down at the phone happy to be texting her girlfriend. I let out a sad sigh my mood deflating at the thought of Josh.
"Hey Em, what's going on?" Elena is the first to ask.
"Me and Josh are having an argument. And I just miss talking with him." I admit.
"Hey, it's gonna be okay. I'm sure you guys will figure it out." Elena says wrapping an arm around me while Alex reaches over and pats my knee. I don't say anything but nod my head with a soft smile in agreement.
