Emilia's POV
It was Friday night Elena, Alex, and I sat at the dinner table while Abuelita served us.
"Oh, someone looks nice." Elena says to mom as she walks into the living room.
"Oh, gracias. I learned to do the contouring on the YouTube. Oh! She looks nice, too. Interesting." Abuelita says thinking Elena meant her. But she also turns to see mom and gets suspicious.
"Very... interesting." I say in the same tone as Abuelita.
"Should I be interested? Because I'm not." Alex says from his seat.
"What are you guys talking about" mom asks.
"Lupita, it is Friday at 7:00 p.m. Usually by now, your sweatpants are on and your bra is off." Abuelita states.
"You have a date." Elena deduces."It's a date!" Abuelita agrees.
"What? Can't I just shower, put on lipstick and nice clothes just for myself? Yeah, I'm not even buying it." Mom tries to cover but gives up.
I don't think that's where she's really going though. We've been through this whole "first date after a divorce" thing so why is she pretending to hide it?
"Yes, why not be honest? Mira, for ejemplo, I am going to church tonight to feed the poor. There, I said it." Abuelita says.
"Okay, fine. It's a date. Just a casual drink, not a big deal. I met him through a friend. He will never replace your papi. No, he's not Cuban." Mom says answering all the questions she knows we'll ask.
"Your date no longer interests me." Abuelita says.
Anyway, I gotta go soon, but I forgot Abuelita and I are both doing something. Alex, what're you doing tonight?" Mom asks.
"Chilling at Finn's house." Alex answers.
"Didn't you just say this morning that you had so much homework to do this weekend?" Mom asked skeptically.
"Finn has this genius idea to fill up a shopping cart with candy and ask girls if they wanna hop in our sweet ride." Alex says.
"Okay, so you're gonna stay home. And Elena will watch you." Mom states.
"Oh. So you automatically assume I don't have any plans but that Emilia does?" Elena asked.
"You have plans?" Mom asked.
"Yeah she's coming to the movies with me and my friends." I defend. We were supposed to meet Josh and Daron there.
"Well you have to cancel. I need you guys to watch your brother." Mom says causing us both to groan.
"Ay, qué bueno. Finally, you are going to pick a boy to be your quinces escort." Abuelita says.
"Abuelita, we already asked someone and we should know by the end of the day." I tell her.
"They're in our English class. We're just friends. And no, they're not Cuban." Elena answers the questions Abuelita and mom wanted to ask.
"Why do you two love to hurt me?" Abuelita says with a pout.
"Anyway, have a good date, Mom." I say trying to change the subject.
"And don't try to hide stuff from us." Elena says as mom opens the door.
"What can I say? I'm a terrible liar." Mom says closing the door.
40 minutes later I'm texting Josh trying to figure out how we can see each other. I'm so tired of life getting in the way of us hanging out.
