Emilia's POV

It was just us kids and mom in her scrap piece of a car on our way to drop Alex off at at baseball practice.

"Mom, I'm gonna miss the first pitch. Go faster!" Alex says from next to me in the back seat.

"Alex, you know Mrs. Resnick doesn't go faster. Unless we're going downhill, and then she might not stop." Mom says.

"We are so late. Just try." Alex begs. And so mom speeds up.

"Mom, I smell gas." I say with my lips turned up and hearing the tires squeal.

"All right. Now, you smell Hawaii." Mom says as she sprays some air freshener.

"Maybe the car's mad 'cause papi stuck it with the name Mrs. Resnick." Elena suggest.

"You know your papi named her after a hot teacher he had a crush on." Mom says smiling at the memories.

"Yeah, but by now I bet Mr. Resnick's traded her in for a younger model." Alex jokes.

"That's not funny, papito." Mom says in disapprovment.

"It's not funny. Society treats middle-age women shamefully. I read a study online--" Elena starts to rant.

"Okay, who wants to hear some tunes?" Mom says turning on the radio.

"No!" We all groan not wanting to listen to this song for the 10 millionth time in our lives.

"Don't leave me in all this pain, don't leave me out in the rain." Mom starts to sing. But Elena turns the radio off.

"Aw, right before the good part." Mom says while pouting.

"There is no good part. That CD's been stuck in this car my whole life." I say matter of factly.

"Uh, excuse me? It's a cassingle. Why are we slowing down?" Mom corrects but we soon hear the car sputtering.

"Who turned on the AC? You know Mrs. Resnick can't handle that!" Mom says as Elena's eyes widen.

"I'm sorry, but it's 90 degrees and you won't let us roll the windows down." Elena defends.

"Because then they don't go back up. And it's only a crime to leave children in a hot car if it's parked. I looked it up!" Mom states back.

"Great. Okay, guys. You know the drill. Por favor, Santa Francisca de Roma, ayúdanos. Uno, dos y tres." Mom says as we stop. Us kids clasp hands. She says a quick prayer before trying the ignition.

"See? Mrs. Resnick's still got it." Mom says happily before the engine dies again.

"Ugh. Well...it'll probably be 20 minutes before a tow truck gets here. So, what should we do to pass the time? Oh, I know. Unbreak my heart. Say you'll love me again. Everybody!" Mom says while turning the radio back on are.

"Undo this hurt you caused when you--" we all sing together. And there we sat listening to the same song for 30 minutes.

Soon our usual tow and mechanic company pulls up and we see it's Hector who is picking us up. We go to open the doors but they're stuck again so we let the back seats down to crawl out through the trunk. Which leads to Alex ripping his pants.

"Hey guys. How's it going today?" He asked. As he opens the door.

"We're pretty good considering everything else." Mom says guesturing to the car and Alex's pants. Hector and mom make small talk while he hooks up the car. And Hector is kind enough to drop us at Alex's practice since it's on the way.
