*CW for underage drinking*
Y/N POV
Saturday, September 7, 1985."Steve." Eddie said flatly and all the blood drained from my face. I whipped around to face him fully and gripped tightly onto the edge of my dresser, nearly collapsing.
"Steve!?" I exclaimed breathlessly. Eddie shrugged and went back to flipping through my phone book indifferently, now scribbling doodles on it with a pen he found on my bedside. I rushed over to the phone and redialed Steve's number. Fuck Fuck Fuck. I held my breath as the line trilled.
"Hello?" Steve answered after a few rings.
"Steve, hi, you called?" I twisted the phone cord around my finger nervously.
"Hi, y/n!" Steve cheerily greeted me over the phone. "Who was that? It didn't sound like your dad."
"Oh yeah, that was my um..." I scrambled for an answer before muttering the first thing that came to my mind. "Cousin! Yes, my cousin is visiting from out of town."
"Oh, okay," I imagined Steve shrugging over the line. "Anywho, are we still on for lunch today?"
I slapped my palm onto my forehead. I forgot Steve and I had plans. Again. This only happened when I was with Eddie. I peeked back at Eddie from over my shoulder, his eyes still glued to my phone book as he flipped through it aimlessly.
"Um, yeah," I ran a stressed hand over my face. I really need to stop getting myself into these situations.
"Cool-i-o!" Steve practically cheered in a sing-songy voice. "I'll be over soon. See ya!"
I hung up the phone and grimaced with guilt at Steve's sweet disposition. I hated lying to Steve, but if he knew I was with Eddie, it would ruin everything. I heard Eddie set down the phone book and stand up from my bed.
"So, I'm your cousin, huh?" Eddie wrapped his arms around my waist from behind. "Isn't that a little incest-y?"
"You need to get out of here right now," I said sternly, spinning around in his arms to face him.
"What, why?"He dropped his arms and stepped back.
"Because I have plans with Steve and he's gonna be here soon and I can't let him see you here so you have to leave," I demanded as a panic slowly arose in my throat. Eddie plopped down on my bed again, looking up at me with hurt in his eyes.
"But what about last night?" Eddie spoke, barely above a whisper.
"Eddie," I sighed, sitting down next to him. It hurt me to see him like this; that I was the reason for his pain.
"Y/n, I like you. A lot," Eddie admitted, grabbing onto my hands lightly. My heart fluttered at knowing he returned my feelings for him.
He reached over and brushed my hair out of my face, searching my expression for a reaction. I yearned to kiss him, wanting nothing more than to profess my feelings back. But I couldn't.
"Eddie, you have to go. I can't let Steve know that we talk, let alone just fucked. I just got him back and I can't risk losing him again," I looked down at our intertwined fingers to avoid his piercing gaze. He ripped his hands away and stood up abruptly.
"Maybe we should just be friends." Eddie muttered, his back to me as he grabbed his keys off my nightstand. My heart sank, not wanting things with Eddie to end like this.
"Eddie-" I grabbed his hand in an attempt to fix this, but he yanked it away from me.
"No, y/n. Things are too complicated already with you and Steve right now and I don't want to add to it." He turned back to me with a mix of longing and distain in his eyes. I bit the inside of my cheek as I mulled it over in my head. He was right and I knew it, but I couldn't stand hurting him. I frowned.
