Chapter 42: The Break Up

Cherry and I both take a deep breath before entering my house. Neither Darry nor Soda are home, which means it's probably just Ponyboy, Johnny, and Twobit. Steve usually doesn't come around unless Soda is here. Those two are inseparable.

Cherry and I enter the house. Johnny and Ponyboy are doing their homework together at the dining room table.

"They're so cute." Cherry whispers and I shiver feeling her hot breath on my cheek and neck.

Two-Bit is on the floor watching Mickey. That boy never is sitting in an actual seat.

"Oh hey, girls!" Two-bit chimes and looks at me with his eyebrows raised. I smile at him. Cherry leaves to go to the dining room and I sit with Two-Bit.

"What's this about?" He whispers.

"Tell you later," I respond. I will have to leave out the part about Cherry possibly being gay though. That wouldn't be fair to her.

~switch to Cherry's Pov. I decided to switch things up for a change~

I sit down at the dining room table next to Ponyboy. He turns and looks at me, shocked.

"Oh hey, Cherry! What are you doing here?" He asks a bit nervously.

"I came to talk to you... alone." I state nervously.

"Oh um okay. W-we can go to my room and talk. I'll be right back Johnny." Ponyboy says, his voice shaky.

I follow him to his room. I've never been in here before. It's cute.

"So, Cherry. What's up?" Pony sits on his bed.

"I want to break up." I blurt out, trying not to waste time.

"What? Oh no! Oh my gosh! This is... heartbreaking news." It's almost funny how awful he is at pretending to be sad. Bad lying skills must be a Curtis twin trait. "Can I at least know why?"

"Umm. Well... I just don't feel like this is working out. I'm sorry Ponyboy."

"It's okay. I feel the same way. And I'm sort of in love with someone else."

"Is it Johnny?"

"W-what? No, I'm not- I'm not gay."

"It's okay Pony. I'm not homophobic."

"Okay then yeah. It is Johnny. Do you promise you won't tell anyone?"

"Cross my heart."

"Thanks, Cherry. I'm sorry things didn't work out."

"It's okay Pony. I'm in love with someone else too."

"Really? Who are they?"

"Well, you're kind of close with them so you have to promise you won't say anything."

"I swear."

"It's Lavender."

"Really? You're a lesbian?!" Pony sounds so shocked.

"Well, I don't know what I am. But I know I like your sister."

~back to Lavender's pov~

After about fifteen minutes, Cherry and Ponyboy emerge. They both look pretty happy. It looks like things went well.

Cherry grabs her winter jacket off of the coat rack and I walk her out.

"So how'd it go?" I ask.

"Extremely well. We both came out to each other, too. It went really well. We're still going to the dance together, though. As friends."

"That's great, Cherry. I'm so glad!"

"Thanks for everything today. A huge weight has been lifted off of my shoulders."

"You're welcome, Cherry! I'm always here if you want to talk."

"Thanks. Oh, and I don't mind if you tell Johnny about me being gay. I trust him. Two-Bit, too. And Two probably already knows, anyway. He's literally a psychic."

"Okay Cherry. I'll see you Friday afternoon!"

"Goodbye, Lavender!" Cherry pulls me into a hug, and then quickly kisses me on the cheek before getting into her car and driving off. I am just left there with the biggest grin ever on my face. Oh what a day!
