I carelessly clutched my abused backpack and made my way towards the subway. When one glances around they might spot ravenous rats, a collection of unbathed human beings, and a cluster of unpleasant aromas but all I see is a place that needs love. I find myself here a lot, I depend on it to get me around and serve me opportunities.
"Maya!" Riley screeches with her high pitched voice.
"Riley!' I say with less enthusiasm, almost as if she was a complete stranger. But this quirky girl is the farthest thing from a stranger. I just look at her and smile because there's not one thing in my life I can count on to always be there but she's permanent. When everything is constantly spinning and I can't seem to focus my eyes, she will be my eyes. She's gotten me out of more trouble than Justin Bieber has experienced. I don't want to be messed up, life just handed me that description.

"Are you excited for school?'" She asked all giddy. Riley was such an angel, and that's something I needed. I need her annoyingly golden behavior to set me straight and guide me.

"Nope." I said while popping the p.

The subway was loading passengers so we found our way inside and grasped into a pole.

"Maya! Are you coming over for Christmas? We should exchange gifts and you should have a nice home cooked meal."

The Matthew's house was where I felt most at home. The cluttered, tiny apartment my mother and I reside in is barely large enough for a dog let alone two people, not like she was ever home anyways. I sometimes felt guilty about this setup, Riley's parents have always made sure I have had everything I need and if I don't they will go out of their way to make sure I'm all set. They didn't ask for a third child, I just felt like such a burden in their lives. They've never treated me like I was a problem though, they just understand me.

"I don't want to be in the way, holidays are for family celebrations " I admitted.

"Maya, you've been coming to family game nights consecutively since we were five. You practically live at our house. You are family."

My heart felt all warm and suffocated with happiness. I loved hearing those words, it made me feel so normal and like I wasn't alone. I don't have to pretend with the Matthews family, they accept my long list of flaws. At home with my mother, I had to be strong for her and pretend like I didn't miss her because I knew this is what she had to do.

"Okay, sure. " I smiled genuinely.

"Great! You'll get to formally meet my uncle Josh. The three of us hung out a couple of times when we were younger but I doubt you remember him. "

"How old is he now?"
I did remember exactly who she was talking about. When I was six, we were all playing on the rusty old swing sets and josh stood in front of my swing planted to the ground. I told him to move or I'd run him over but instead he surprised me by pursing out his lips and walking into my swing. He kissed me, like a slobbery peck you give your grandparents but it was still my first kiss. I was disgusted, at this stage in the game I still thought boys were mutations that carried various diseases. I jumped off of my swing and ran away. Where was Riley at this time? She was running around aimlessly and being a complete goof. Some things never change.

"He's 17." Riley reassured me.

He was three years older than me. I didn't have any interest in him anyways so I don't know why I bothering asking. Boys deceive you. They say they love you and they leave. I put my guard up when it come to guys because of how my dad just abandoned us.

We finally arrived at school and took a seat in our designated spots.

"Ladies."

"Farkle" Riley and I both spoke in unison.

Farkle is a special little guy. He's one of my good friends and although I take him for granted most of the time I know he'll always be there for me. He's probably related to Einstein, he's just so smart.

"Morning M'am" teased Lucas as he gestured to his invisible cowboy hat.

My body tensed up and my mind chilled with our everyday banter.

"One day I will get to you, Ranger Rick" I promised him and turned around.

Lucas was known as Mr.Perfect, our moral compass. Farkle,Lucas, Riley, and I are all best friends. Sometimes he drove me insane but other times I appreciated our little talks.

Class went by fast because I zoned out to every sentence that spilled from Mr.Matthews mouth except for his concluding sentence.

"Enjoy your Winter break guys. Have fun and be safe."
