Blurs of scarlet and cobalt blue illuminated the living room. The vociferous rhythm of sirens sent signals of panic to everyone's brains. I glanced around to spot countless beer stains and numerous pieces of shattered glass smeared in the ivory carpet. The faces that were glued with smiles and giggles, the ones that were jumping up and down like little kids in a bouncy house, and screaming "fight, fight!!" ,were now tripping over furniture in order to escape the wrath of their families. I didn't feel like hopping out a window or climbing the fence in order to cease the trouble, I was the trouble. I couldn't just run away from it. My feet were tied down to those carpets as if I was its body guard.
"Come on Maya.. Let's go!" Riley screamed as she attempted to drag me out of the clustered house. I could feel the guilt swelling in my brain, why did I always put her in these situations?
However, my feet still laid, sunken into the plush, tarnished carpets. Several bodies brushed past me in a frenzy but I didn't flinch, I felt paralyzed.
"Maya!" Riley screeched hopelessly.
My eyes were glazed and I continued to watch as the house emptied.
As soon as the door slam finally sent a message to the two adrenaline high idiots, they separated from each other with withering stares.
A couple men wearing badges stepped forward and didn't say a word. The authority figures proceeded through the house, inspecting all of the damage and alcohol.
"Who's house is this?" A brooding man in the blue uniform asked.
Jess hesitantly raised his hand as he shoveled through his sweaty, jet black curls.
"I assume it wasn't just the five of you that made all of this mess."
"No sir." Riley spoke shakily. Her fingers were at loss of what to do so they twisted and turned between each other. Her thighs were shaking and she couldn't seem to look up.
"It's okay." I whispered as I took a grasp on her twitchy hands.
"Who caused all of this damage?" The officer asked calm and assertively.
"We did." Josh stepped forward nudging Logan.
"Is that so?" The officer stepped closer to the beautiful blond haired boy with the puppy dog eyes.
"Yes sir." Logan spoke with confidence as if he had done this a million times.
"You two ladies look a little young to be around alcohol. How old are you?"
"14." I muttered under my breath.
"I'm 13.. I'll be 14 soon!" Riley added.
"I'll drive you girls home. As for you boys, I'm going to have to hold you until I can get ahold of your parents."
Josh delivered me a look of sorrow and remorse. His eyes were soft and he struggled to look me directly in the eyes.
"I'm sorry." He mouthed but I already knew.
Riley and I crawled into the back of the officers cruiser and sat in silence.
"I'm going to have to alert your folks where you've been tonight."
We both looked at each other and exchanged fear. I held onto Riley's hand and placed my head on her strong shoulders.
"I'm so so sorry."
"Save it Maya. I can't keep doing this." Riley whispered.
"What do you mean you can't do this? Do what?"
"Keep getting into trouble because of you."
"Riley I didn't force you to come."
"No, but as your friend.. I ALWAYS want to do right by you. But lately this friendship has felt very one sided. You disregard my feelings and you always drag me into this chaos. I love you but I can't be around you.. At least like this. Maya you're toxic to me. I'm good for you but what are you doing for me? You never listen to me about my issues and you took the only boy I've ever liked. I think it's Josh. I don't think you should date him anymore or see him, I think he's messing with your brain. ...and if this doesn't open your eyes to that nothing will. We're in a police car Maya! My parents are going to be so disappointed. I know you don't care but I do. I can't be your friend while you're seeing Josh. I miss you, I need my best friend. You go to these crazy extents for Josh and he has screwed you over multiple times. I'm scared for you."
"Are you asking me to choose between the two of you? Riley I barely have people in my life that care about me and josh is one of them. I don't want to hurt him."
"Maya, I would never ask you to do this if I thought it would hurt you. At least, try it! Give yourself some separation and see how it is. Just spend sometime with me. Boys aren't everything, but we have are."
He wasn't just some boy.. But Riley wasn't just somebody I could have vapor from my life.
"Maya?"
"Okay." I took a deep breath. Riley's never asked for anything before and at this moment k needed to be her best friend. It was easier to agree to this right now because of how obnoxious Josh was tonight. He was poison. The car came to an abrupt halt, alongside my heart. We were at Riley's.
"I'm sorry."
"I know." She whispered and looked down at the floor.
The tall, intimidating man led the way towards her apartment and I waited patiently inside of the locked car. I played with my fingers and felt sweat began to drown my shirt. When he came back, I knew I was next.
After a couple minutes of silence, we had arrived. I remained sunken into my seat and felt a sudden panic.
"Come on, let's go." He commanded sternly.
"Are you Maya's mother?" He asked as soon as we arrived to my little "home.".
"Yes?" She asked puzzled.
I looked past her, I didn't want her to give me those eyes. The eyes that screamed disappointment, I see those far too often.
I blocked out his explanation of why he was bringing me home and just waited for my little legs to give out.
"Alright goodnight." I broke out of my trance and was dragged inside by my mother.
"Mom."
"Save it Maya..Just go to bed. We'll talk tomorrow."
I closed my eyes, I couldn't wait to drift off from this constant feeling of why. Why did I do it? Why am I a horrible friend? Why am I not good enough? These questions gently rocked me to sleep. Just as I thought I was peacefully off to sleep, I heard a knock on my window.
Who is it?
