Enjolras Estate

Ninette's POV

I was in our lounge room, sitting in front of the fire with a book. Each page seemed to fill the loneliness that has yet to truly fade since Adrian left for war. Even with the newest company that makes residence in my womb, I miss my husband terribly. My thoughts were interrupted by Piper barging into the room with a look of both excitement and panic. "Nina!"

"Piper, what has gotten into you?" I ask in a confused concern.

She helps me up  out of the chair. "He's home."

It took me a moment to let her words sink in. "Pardon Moi?"

"Adrian."

That's all she had to say for my heart to begin to sprint in my chest. I look around trying to figure out what to do, how to stand. Do I let him see the baby bump or do I hide it? Do I sit or do I stand? I hear his heavy boots walking toward the room, so I decided to stand by the window with my back turned.

The creek of the door opening can be heard and I here his angelic voice speaking lowly with Piper before there is silence again. His presence could be felt only feet away. "Ninette." He calls out to me.

This was it.

"Look around. Look around at how lucky we are to be alive right now." I turn and look at him. His eyes go from mine to my stomach. I could see the panic in his eyes, but I wanted to reassure him.

"How long have you known?" He asked as he stepped forward. His face was unreadable.

"Six months or so." I admitted.

"Ninette, you should have told me." He said with a sigh as he grabbed my hands in his.

"I wrote to the General a month ago."

His eyes went wide as he realized what I had done. "No..."

"I begged him to send you home."

He drops my hands and walks a few steps away in frustration, before looking back to me. "You should have told me."

"I'm not sorry." I tell him honestly as he begins to pace. "I knew you'd fight until the war was won."

"The war's not done!"

"But you deserve a chance to meet your son." I reason, making him stop and look at me in shock. "Look around, look around at how lucky we are to be alive right now."

Tears fill his eyes and he tangles his hands into his hair in panic. "Will you relish being a traitor's wife? I'll be unable to provide for your life." He exclaims, reminding me that his reputation is tarnished because of the last battle at the café.

I step forward and place my hand on his arm, getting his attention. Then, I gently place my hand on his cheek. "I relish being your wife. Look around, look around. Look at where you are. Look at where you started." His eyes move to the fire place mantle where the Le Amis picture was placed. "The fact that you're alive is a miracle. Just stay alive, that would be enough." I grab his hand and place it on my stomach. "And if this child shares a fraction of your smile or a fragment of your mind, look out world! That would be enough."
