El 1st person POV:

I went to visit Max again today, as I do most days. Some days I do what Lucas does, just talk to her and hang out. But on the days that Lucas isn't there, I usually like to go into her mind and actually talk to her. So that's exactly what I'm doing today. When I get to her room, my radio is already sitting on her side table. I turn it onto the station we use for talking on the walkie talkie that Dustin, Mike, Will, and Lucas use to talk, so I can have the static noise and if they need me they can talk on there and I can exit and respond in any emergencies. When I get to the empty black room, I'm once again met with nothing. It takes a few minutes to get to her head. After a little bit of wondering and calling, I finally see light. The light is usually her dream. In this case, it is.

I enter her dream and try to find Max. This dream looks like the hill we went on to talk to Suzie-Dustin's girlfriend- before me and Mike turned around and went back home. Except instead of an empty hill, there is a small cottage at the top. It's very cute. There is a porch swing on the porch (duh), tall plants, and flowers also on the porch. The door is a cute sage green, and there is a window beside the door, in front of the swing. The cottage is one floor and is the color white, the roof is a mix of light and dark brown, but not the normal brown color. It's hard to explain, but the point is that there is a house with nobody in front of it. When I get to the house, I knock on the door. I stand by and wait for Max to answer. After standing for a minute without her answering, I look into the windows. The window is in front of a dining room, when I look into the hallway and the kitchen, the lights are off all over the house. Maybe she's not home.

"Boo!"

"Ah!"

"Ha! I scared you!" Said Max, standing behind me and hugged me from behind. We giggle for a minute before she let's go and I can turn around to look at her. Her smile is beaming and it becomes contagious and it makes me smile like an idiot. We giggle one more time and she takes my hand, getting my to follow her to the back of the house, which has a huge flower garden. She lightly pushes me to the ground and lays down next to me. We look to each other with goofy smiles. Max looks back up to the sky and stares at the clouds.

For some reason I can't stop looking at her. I'm stuck in a zone of this imaginary max, when the real max is sleeping in a hospital bed. She's so gorgeous.

I want to kiss her.

What? No. Shut up, stupid intrusive thoughts. This is Max, not Mike.

But, God, do I wanna kiss her. I wanna say it.

"I wanna kiss you."

"Huh?" Max replies, looking back to me curiously.

*GASP*

Oh my god. Did I just say that? No way. This is a dream. Wait it actually is a dream. But it's also Max's consciousness. Shit.

"What? I didn't say anything. I-I don't know what you're talking about. Look! That cloud looks like mike a little!" I say as an excuse, pointing to a random cloud that does not look like Mike at all.

"...Eleven?"

"Yeah?"

"I like you."

Shit.

"Like... I like like you."

Silence fills the air, and my brain is scrambling trying to think of the right thing so say to this.

"Sorry, forget that, we can pretend this never happened."

"Yeah..."

Ugh, I hate this feeling. I don't want to forget about it, but I have to.

"I had a dream about you."

"You did?"

"Mhm! I was all old and withered, and you were still nice and pink."

"You think I'm nice?"

Damn it. There's that feeling again.

"Well... yeah! I love you, El."

My face grows hot and my smile is bright to match Max's.

"...I- Love you too."

"El? Is everything alright, El? Why are you crying?" A male voice calls. I wonder who it is and why I hear it before I remember that this isn't reality.

"Goodbye, Max."

I open my eyes and I see Lucas standing on the opposite side of Max's hospital bed. A tear falls into my lap and I wipe my eyes with my hands.

"Sorry- Just checking up to see if you were alright, because you were crying and the lights were flickering a bit."

"No, I'm fine. Thanks for checking up on me. Why're you here, I your parents have stuff today so they couldn't drop you off?"

"I rode my bike today, I just really missed Max, ha."

This is so awkward. I want to go home.

"...I'm gonna head home, you can talk to Max for a bit."

"You sure?"

"Yeah." I say firmly.

-----------

When I get home I slam the both the front door and my bedroom door, in anger and sadness.

"Hey! No slamming doors!" Hopper says in a frustrated tone.

I flop onto my bed, head landing in the pillow and cry my eyes out.

There is a slight knock at the door and there is a feminine voice calling in a comforting tone.

"Hey, Eleven. Is everything alright?" Joyce asks.

I take a tissue and clean myself up, then sit up, facing Joyce, who is now sitting at the end of my bed. I look to my left and look to see if Will was looking -because we share a room now- which he is, but he looks away and continues to his painting. When I look back to Joyce, she looks sad to see me upset.

"What happened? Is it because of Max? Do you need water?"

All I can do is cry, so I let it out and Joyce takes me into her arms. I cry onto her shoulder and just cry and cry and cry.
