"Good morning to my favorite classmates! The sun is bright, the birds are chirping, and I'm turning 17 this weekend! Big news for each of you, you are all invited to my birthday party!! April 7th!!! Please come!"
*AN: I know Sana's birthday is Dec 29th, but this date is for the sake of the story :))*
Sana invites the entire school to her 17th birthday party through the morning announcements.
Chaeyoung rolls her eyes knowing very well she will have to attend the bubbly girl's birthday bash. She doesn't mind hanging out with friends but Sana's party is bound to be full of strangers and excessive drinking.
"You're coming right?" Chaeyoung asks Mina
"Are all of us really invited?"
"Sana isn't joking. Her family throws her a ludicrous party every year at a special rented venue and she invites as many people as she can. At least half of the school goes every time, there's multiple bartenders, catered food, a bouncy house, and way too much more."
Mina twirls her hair in between her fingers slowly.
'A real high school party...'
---
Sweat beads down Mina's forehead as she sits on the locker room bench after a long period of ballet class full of pirouettes and fouettes. She takes off her pointe shoes and begins to remove her leotard. She props open her locker and freezes at the sight of a tiny surprise.
Inside her locker was a pink paper crane and on its wing was written in tiny letters: unfold.
Mina thinks back to a few weeks ago when she was folding an origami paper crane at the counter of Nayeon's work before getting a paper cut.
She glances at her previously sliced finger to see the finger is completely healed with no scar. Mina carefully reverses the paper crane pattern to unfold the secret message.
"Come by my work today at 5"
Mina's face becomes flushed with pink up to her ears. And she puts the creased pink paper into her bag.
---
Nayeon stares at the clock and can't help but fidget with her nails.
'It's 4:58... just 2 more minutes.'
Nayeon has too much on her plate to hang out with friends outside of school so she almost never invites people to meet up, yet she invited Mina with a paper crane to come to her work.
'What if she didn't see the crane? '
Which is definitely impossible because Nayeon followed Mina around the hallways for a week straight writing down and memorizing her schedule and activities down to the seconds. She knows for sure Mina finishes ballet class at 1:30 and always goes to the locker room right after. She even bribed a girl with an exclusive selfie and hug to learn which locker was Mina's.
Nayeon's head continues to fill with unrealistic doubts that Mina won't come but all her thoughts are subsided when she sees a blonde girl cross the street through the glass door. Nayeon immediately scoots forward, fixes her posture, and pretends to be studying to make it seem like she wasn't just waiting for a good 30 minutes for Mina to maybe show up.
The door creaks open and jingles a bell. Nayeon acts surprised and looks up from her textbook.
"Mina"
Mina looks at the brunette with her hair half up half down wearing a yellow apron grinning from ear to ear.
"Nayeon" she tilts her head with a subtle smile
"You came"
"Your crane told me to, I didn't know you could make one"
"Of course, I'm a jack of all trades. The most talented girl in the school, really. How would I not know how to make a simple crane."
Nayeon glances at the garbage can next to her full of crumpled pink sticky notes. There are at least 20 failed cranes inside the trash. Nayeon replays last night in her head, she's sitting at the counter replaying a YouTube tutorial on origami cranes struggling to get past the first 3 folds.
Mina is charmed by the girl's boastfulness
"Is there something important you needed me for?"
Mina has no clue as to why Nayeon would need her to stop by the shop.
Nayeon reaches down under the counter and pulls out a giant Minecraft Lego set. Mina can't believe her eyes.
"Surprise Minaya!"
"Is this the limited edition?? How did you get this? I tried to order it on the day it dropped but my private ballet lessons ran late and everything was sold out."
"We got it from a delivery last week and it was the only one, it looked really cool and I remembered you liked Minecraft, so I lied to a bunch of little boys saying we didn't have it but I really stashed it under the counter saving it for you"
Mina squeals and does a few tiny jumps up and down before covering the bottom half of her face with her hands, concealing her full gummy smile. Nayeon is pleased to see Mina so excited.
"How did you know I liked Minecraft?"
"Your um, shirt from the last time. It was a villager"
Mina blushes realizing Nayeon remembers that basic tee she hurriedly threw on that Saturday morning.
"Thank you Nayeon. I can't wait to add this to my collection. I'll be working on it all weekend!"
"The whole weekend? You aren't going to Sana's birthday party?" Nayeon cocks her head
"Oh, that... I've never been to a big party. Sana and I are friends but I'll really feel out of place there. I would much rather be in my room playing in the comfort of my Legos, embarrassingly enough."
"You have to come. Come with me, I'll make sure you have fun!" Nayeon looks at Mina intently, eager to persuade her
"You can't miss it. Everyone is going to be there, even Chaeyoung. It's like the party of the year."
Mina pauses to think in head for a few seconds.
'How can I say no to her?'
"Fine, I'll come. But only for you"
---
A few days later at the end of the week, Mina opens her locker to find another paper crane. She smiles and unfolds it.
"See you tomorrow night :)"
