CHAPTER TWENTY SIX

Conversation took us everywhere,and we talked until the sun came up...
*Sabrina carpenter.

VALENTINA.

"Don't worry you'll be fine ,"Theo assures me as we walk up to his front door.
He's house is relatively larger than mine,I mean I heard he was loaded but seeing this in person is different.

"I hope so,"I reply.

Theo opens the door and we walk in.

"Maxy,is that you"I hear a woman call.

"You're called maxy at home,"I say trying so hard not to laugh.

"Mom I told you to stop calling me that,"he replies looking embarrassed and I laugh more.
Shortly a pretty lady,walks out of the kitchen I'm assuming dressed in an apron with her platinum blonde hair in a ponytail.

"Hello Mrs Mendez,"I say as she approaches us.

"Oh my aren't you a beauty,"she says and I'm pretty sure my cheeks turn pink.

"Thank you Mrs Mendez,so are you,"I reply.

"You can call me Caroline dear,,"she says before turning to Theo."she's pretty,"she attempts to whisper.

"Mom you know she can hear you,"Theo says looking at me and I just smile awkwardly.

"Am I embarrassing you infront of your girlfriend,"Caroline asks pulling Theo cheeks and I can't help but laugh.

"Mom stop it,"Theo whines and he looks so adorable right now,"and she's not my girlfriend,".he adds.

"Oh my bad,I thought you too were like together,"Caroline says looking at me smiling sheepishly.
Theo wasn't wrong she is a ball of sunshine.

"We are just friends actually,"I say smiling.

"It's a shame, though you and Theo would have made beautiful babies,"she gushes and it's my turn to feel embarrassed.

"Mom stop it,"Theo says,"you're making her uncomfortable,we talked about this,"he adds and Caroline's smile fades a little.

"But I'm only saying the truth,I mean look at her,she's walking perfection,"Caroline says and it warms my heart.
No one has ever told me that.
Ever.

"Mom,why don't you finish up dinner while I show Val around,"Theo suggests.

"But I still want to talk to her,"his mom argues back and I can't help but smile at their banter.

"Theo,it's fine I'll help your mom finish up dinner you can show me the house later,"I reply.
And Theo looks stunned.

"You heard her,you can go freshen up in the meantime,"Caroline says and Theo stares at me blankly for some time.

"You sure you'll be okay,?",.

"I'll be fine,now go,"I say waving him off.
He leaves us and Caroline leads me to the kitchen.

"You have a very lovely house,"I say in awe of this well organized kitchen.

"Thank you dear,my daughter Cassie did most of the interior designing,"she says.
I didn't know Theo had siblings.

"She did a very good job,"I say.

"Yah, anyway how did you and maxy meet,"Caroline asks and I don't miss the way her eyes sparkle when she mentions Theo.

"We met in self defense class at school,"I answer keeping my answers brief.

"Are you also a combat major,"she asks reducing the heat on the cooker.

"Yes,"I reply"do you need help with anything,"I add.

"Actually no dear I've got everything covered,"she says smiling and I smile back.

"I know it seams like I'm intruding but maxy has never brought a girl home willingly,and I've seen the way he was looking at you ,I know it sounds crazy but I'm his mom and I can tell when my son has eyes for a certain girl,are you sure there's nothing going on between you too?"she says and I know right now it's baseless to lie.

"We actually dated once but things didn't work out,so we're just friends now,"I say smiling and her smile falters.

"Why didn't things work out,"she inquires.

"We're just different people,besides it was a mutual decision to go our own separate ways."I say quickly.
There's no need for her to know what already happened,I moved on and everything is in the past now.

"I hope my son didn't hurt you"She asks with concern in her eyes.
We hurt each other alot,but we're past that,no need for reopening old wounds.

"I can assure you he didn't,"I reply smiling.

We talk about other things and I'm glad she doesn't ask about our relationship again.
Soon we're done setting the table and Theo joins us for dinner in some sweats and a t-shirt.
Dinner is going great, Caroline keeps telling me stories about Theo's childhood, which are hilarious.

"You cried because your toys wouldn't talk to you,"I ask laughing and Theo looks embarrassed.

"I was seven,Val for crying out loud,"he replies and I keep laughing.

"Mom,you just had to tell her didn't you,"Theo whines.

"Don't worry this stays between us,"I say as my laughter calms down.

Theo stares at me and I just smile at him.
I realize it's getting late and I should get going.

"Dinner was great Mrs Mendez,but it's getting late,I should get going,"I say and I see her smile drop.

"It's already late outside,why don't you stay the night,"Theo suggests and before I can reply Mrs Mendez beats me to it.

"Yes dear,stay the night it's already very late,"She says and I can feel their gaze on me.

"I don't want to intrude..."I start but I'm cut off.

"No dear you can never intrude,I can't let you go home alone at this hour,please stay,?"Caroline insists.
I look over at Theo and he nods at me.

"I'll stay the night,"I say finally giving in.

"Great,"Caroline squeals with excitement,"I'll prepare the guest room,"she adds and I smile.

"Thank you for letting me stay,"I say.

"You're welcome here any time,she begins,"I'll go get dessert,"she adds before walking away.

"I see you're getting along with mom,"Theo says as Caroline dissappers into the kitchen.

"Yah she's very nice,"I reply.

"I heard what you told mom, about our break up,thank you,"he says giving me a smile.

"Anytime,"I reply smiling.

We continue staring at each other and it's at this point I realized Bree was right.
I'm gonna be okay after all.
