An Interesting Anniversary

(A/N: surprise, surprise. It's another AU, or at least something that could be considered one. My last chapter got pretty angsty so naturally I had to balance it out with some fluff. This oneshot is where liquor leads to a shocking confession. There is some slight angst, but nothing major. Without further ado, enjoy!)

Kunikida and Dazai had been partners, not to mention the agency's top duo, for nearly three years now. While it was undisputed that they worked extremely well together, things weren't as in sync behind the scenes. As all the rest of the agency members could confirm, Dazai routinely got on every last one of Kunikida's nerves and in turn, Kunikida lectured Dazai all the time. The two of them rarely, if ever, seemed to get along. All the agency members, especially Atsushi, really did wonder how those two were partners. Even after being at the agency for around a year now, Atsushi often wondered about his coworkers.

But things weren't always what they seemed, for the constant arguing wasn't all there was to the duo known as Kunikida and Dazai.

The moments seemed few and far between, but shocking as it may sound, Dazai and Kunikida did have those times where they weren't constantly bickering. Whether it was Kunikida checking on Dazai to make sure he didn't put himself in danger or try to die or Dazai looking out for Kunikida and trying to prevent him from overworking himself, it couldn't be denied that they had each other's backs despite the fact that they didn't always get along.

Today was one of those days where Kunikida found himself not as annoyed by Dazai as he usually was. It was a very important day, after all. The third anniversary of Dazai joining the agency and becoming Kunikida's partner, to be exact. Kunikida decided that at least for today, he wouldn't try to lecture Dazai into doing his work.

Dazai was over the moon about that, so he spent his work shift chatting with Kunikida about anything and everything.

And for once, Kunikida indulged his partner. He decided that Dazai deserved it every now and then.

"Soooooo Kunikida, got any plans for later?" Dazai suddenly asked.

"I was actually about to ask you the same thing," Kunikida admitted.

Dazai's eyes widened. "Really?"

Kunikida nodded.

"Hmmm...not in particular. I just kinda assumed you would since you're the lord of planning," Dazai thought aloud.

Kunikida laughed at the nickname. "Fair enough."

Dazai just gazed at his partner for a minute, slightly shocked. It was pretty rare that he saw Kunikida smile, much less laugh. If Dazai was being honest, it was a beautiful sight.

Wait.

What was he thinking?

Dazai shook it off.

Kunikida noticed. "Are you ok?"

"Yep!" Dazai replied with a smile.

Kunikida studied Dazai for a minute longer. "Ok, that's good. And I did actually sort of have a plan but I wanted to see if you had any first."

"Do tell, my amazing partner," Dazai prompted.

Did he just call me his amazing partner...? Kunikida wondered. He wasn't sure if it was just because he didn't often hear things like that or some other unknown reason, but just those three simple words made him really happy. Then he remembered that Dazai was waiting for an answer, so he brought himself back to reality. "I was going to ask if you wanted to go out somewhere after work to celebrate our anniversary of becoming partners."

Dazai grinned from ear to ear. "I'd love that!"

Kunikida smiled back. "Sounds great. See you then."

"It's a date!" The words slipped out before Dazai realized it.
