Don't Die on Me

(A/N: if the title didn't already give it away, this is going to be quite angsty. With that in mind, I'm providing an angst warning. I was inspired by a fanfic I read that was honestly super sad. But as sad as it was, it gave me an idea that I haven't been able to get out of my head, so I'm doing the smart thing and writing it. Without further ado, enjoy!)

Dazai was still relatively new to the agency, which meant that he didn't know Kunikida-or any of his coworkers, for that matter-too well. However, he definitely viewed the other man as a great partner due to how well they worked together. Aside from that though, he wasn't really used to the way Kunikida very obviously cared about him. He wasn't sure how to feel about that because of how foreign it was. On a basic level, it was nice. At the same time, Dazai was too unused to people being genuinely nice to him to completely see it that way.

And Kunikida could sense that.

He didn't know a single thing about his partner's past, but he figured that something had to have happened to cause Dazai to be the way he was. He only wished he knew what it was so he could help Dazai. He'd tried to ask Dazai if he was ok a few times, but Dazai only ever falsely claimed he was, which only added to Kunikida's belief that Dazai definitely wasn't ok. He didn't want to force Dazai to open up to him since they didn't know each other too well and he also knew that sort of thing should happen naturally. But he was still worried about Dazai. How could he not be? They were partners, after all.

One of the main reasons Kunikida worried about Dazai so much was none other than what he was infamous for: the way he always talked about suicide. Dazai tried to present it as joking, but Kunikida didn't believe him, at least not completely. He had a feeling that his bandaged coworker was more serious about wanting to die than he claimed.

At least he hadn't actually attempted it other than that one time he ate a mushroom.

...Or so Kunikida thought.

One fateful day, everything changed.

Everything started out normal. Kunikida went to work like usual and he didn't see Dazai there, but he didn't think much of it at first since it was typical of his partner to skip work. But he usually showed up eventually.

And this time...he didn't.

Kunikida was officially worried now. What if something had happened? What if Dazai was dead for real this time?

He tried to calm down as he raced out of the building to search for Dazai. "Dazai...?"

No response.

"Dazai?" Kunikida called.

Silence.

"DAZAI?!" Kunikida yelled.

Still nothing.

"DAZAI, YOU'D BETTER BE ALIVE!!!!!" Kunikida screamed, beginning to run again after having stopped to look around. He frantically scanned the area as he ran. Dazai had to be ok. He just had to be. If he wasn't...

Kunikida shut that thought down. He couldn't think like that. He had to believe Dazai was ok. Both for Dazai's sake and his own. He had to try and remain hopeful.

"DAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" Kunikida shouted. He looked around, only becoming more and more worried.

Dazai...you can't be dead. Please give me some sort of sign that you're alive... Kunikida thought.

As luck would have it, that exact thing happened.

Kunikida spotted Dazai over in the river and quickly rushed over to him. "Dazai..."

Unsurprisingly, Dazai was unconscious and soaking wet.
