Five Years Ago
When I got a call from his youngest sister telling me, he overdosed I almost lost it. All I did was stay away just like his mother wanted, I mean what else was I supposed to do? His mother got him a wife. Do you want to know, how I know that? I went to his house and found her acting all homey in his living room and honestly, that was it. I walked out and never looked back.
I called my friends and we went clubbing, only to get a call that, he was in the hospital and refused to eat anything until I went there. I hated him, but not to an extent that I would be ok with him being hospitalized so, here I am walking into the hospital emergency section, it's 3 am and I'm wearing sparkling hot pants with a top that shows my cleavage. I see his mother and the chosen daughter-in-law. They were looking at me with disgust and I don't care. "Nikki! You came. Come this way", Amira said ignoring her mother who was shouting about something.
I walked into the ward and he was sleeping on the hospital bed. My chest felt tight but, it was not the time for me to judge him. "Hey bro, look who I found", she said making him open his dark grey eyes. "Nikki, you're really here?", he said with a scratchy voice. I nod in agreement, sitting on the chair that was closest to him. "Mum saw you like that?", he said with a smirk. "Yes she did and she freaked", Amira said with too much excitement.
"Can you give us a minute?", I asked Amira who agreed quickly. I stood up taking a bottle of water that was next to the food that looked untouched. I put a straw in it giving him to sip. He did without saying anything. When he finished all the water, I took the food, I thanked god it was still warm enough to eat, I fed him. There was a knock on the door then it was opened, it was Ahmed, his brother. He looked at my dress code and smiled. "No wonder there is too much noise outside. Hey Nikki", he said giving me a side hug. "Hey", I replied then gave Abdul the last spoon. "You ok man?", he asked his young brother, worry all over his face. "I'm good now", he replied, his eyes not leaving mine. I saw guilt, I saw fear and I knew there was no way we were going to run away from the truth. "Ok, I will be right outside", Ahmed said walking out.
"Nikki, I didn't agree to it. I just got home and found her there. You're the only one that i want. You know that right?", he said still looking at me. He tried to reach for my hand but I pulled away. "How many signs do you need to see that the world is against us huh? we can't be together, nobody goes against your mother. It's time for you to get that in your head. We can't keep doing this. We have been together for 8 years and she still hates me. I'm tired of fighting for us, she will never change", I tried to reason with him but it was like I was talking to myself. He didn't get it.
While he was abroad for studies, I was the one who had to deal with his mother and older sister's discrimination. Amira and Zahra would invite me to family parties and she would chase me out of their home, sometimes calling me bad names or telling people I was manipulating her son. He was not there.
He was not there when I cried myself to sleep because I couldn't afford to call him until he called me, I had no money and I couldn't ask him for it. If I did then his mother would be right. I would prove her right by being the gold digger. I was not going to. I was on the verge of giving up so many times but his father told me that one day she will change, he told me that once she sees the love I had for Abdul, she will let us be. 8 good years have passed and the story is even worse.
Now that Abdul is back, she always finds a way to keep him busy enough to not have time for me. We can't go on dates because during weekdays he is busy learning how to run the business with his father and on weekends, his mother always hosts family events... the whole freaking weekend! I can't go to his house because he is living in one of the bachelor houses that are within their family compound meaning, his mother would know everyone that came in and out of the compound. And the one time I felt courageous enough to walk into their family compound and surprise my boyfriend, I find another woman in it, claiming she is his wife. What more does he want from me?
"Baby, dad said she will change, she just needs time", he said right above a whisper, even he didn't believe what he was saying. "Abdul. It has been forever. I can't live my life this way. This is the last time you will be seeing me, please don't come to my brother's place because I'm quitting. I'm going to start over and you should do the same" I said standing up, whipping my tears away. I didn't want Amira to see me this way. "Nikki", he said without adding another word and I knew he was feeling the pain and so was i.
This is the man I have loved all my life, we met when we were teenagers and we grew up together. Thanks to our fathers, being high school buddies and loving car rallies we were able to meet; it was just love at first sight. I would give anything to have those moments back but that is one thing that I can't have. "I love you Abdul", I said kissing his forehead. I walked out of the hospital avoiding everyone's eyes as I walked back to where I parked my car. I heard footsteps following me so, I stopped and turned. It was his mother. "Nikki, one day... you will be a mother too. You will understand my decision but for now... stay away from my son", the rage that was in her eyes, made me swallow hard. I nodded and continued walking to the parking lot, wondering what I ever did to make her hate me that much.
