Abdul's POV
"What?", I asked hoping that I didn't hear properly. "She took you away from me. We used to be close, you used to tell me everything and then one day you just stopped. All you could talk about was, how you wanted to do things with her and then Hafeez came to me and told me you had a drug problem and that she's the one who tried to talk you out of it. I'm your mother, you were supposed to come to me, not some girl that you just met on a play date. I tried to be a bigger person and told myself it was just a fling, but years passed, and she just stuck around. Zahra and Amira also started being friends with her. They stopped talking to me, and when I asked, they would hide things from me and I couldn't take it anymore. It's my family. I know what I had to do for us to reach where we are now. Who does she think she is? Do you know when was the last time I went to dinner with your father? our anniversary but Nikki comes out of nowhere and started going to dinner with him in our favourite restaurant. In the beginning, I tried telling her to go away nicely but she just kept coming back so I had to do what I had to do. I promised Layla 30% of shares in your company if she agrees to get married to you", "What?", Father asked from the kitchen entrance making us both turn to look at him in shock.
"Hafeez, don't act surprised. You have been ignoring me ever since Zahra told you she met Nikki at the mall. Yes, I know everything and I know if it was Nikki you would give her the whole company and Abdul wouldn't even deny it", She said with so much rage that made me speechless. All this was because of jealousy! "Mother, you mean to tell me that, all this time I have spent trying to please you and be with you, was not enough that you thought my happiness did not matter to you? Nikki wants nothing more than to see us happy. All she ever does is put you first but you were always talking down on her and calling her names that no mother with daughters should. I have spent years covering for you, telling her to endure you because I thought that may be... just maybe you had a good reason to treat her the way you did but jealousy? really? You would rather bribe Layla into harassing me than let me love the woman that loves me for who I am and not my money? You know what? I have had enough of this. Don't you ever call me again!", I said washing my hands then walked out of the house. I heard her calling me but I was too pissed to focus on her. Layla was sitting on the porch looking guilty. This was sick, I need to get home.
"Hey, you ok?", Zahra asked. I ended up shaking my head. I was trembling and I was thankful when she didn't push any further. "Kids! daddy's here come on down", she called them and a few minutes later they came rushing to me. We went to the car, after putting them in their car seats, we drove away.
"Abdul, what's wrong?", Nikki asked when she found me in our room watching a movie. I've been sitting in the bedroom since we got back from mother's. She was busy making cookies for Preety and Rahma. They are Amira's kids and they loved Nikki's chocolate chip cookies. Amira had to come by every weekend to get cookies for them. It was becoming a tradition. One that I loved enough to always pretend to offer my help during baking so that I could eat raw cookie dough.
I know it is what gave Nikki the impression that something was wrong. "It's nothing. I just need time to think about things", I said not looking at her. If I did, she would know I'm lying. "Did I do something?", she asked sitting next to me. "No", I said still avoiding her eyes. I felt her soft hand on my face, turning me to look at her and I met a smiling angel, my angel, my wife. I found myself smiling for no reason, making her smile even bigger. "Are you sure?", she asked seductively making me chuckle at her effort of lifting my mood. "Yes, my beautiful wife. Can you stop distracting me from watching the movie", I told her with a smile still on my face. It is hard to understand how a person like me would get this lucky but either way, I was going to enjoy the attention. "Ok then. I'll be in the kitchen if you need me", she said then kissed my forehead. I made sure to smack her ass as she got out of bed. She rolled her cute eyes at me making me laugh.
"That's messed up man", Greyson said when I told him about what happened with my mother. It had been a week and I haven't answered any of her calls or texts. I couldn't keep it in any longer so I decided to talk to the guys about it. Khaled is on a honeymoon trip, he was caught cheating again and for some reason, he believes that taking Angel on a vacation will help. "The worst part is, I don't know if I should tell Nikki. She has been through a lot and I can't put this on her again", I said more to myself than him. "You've got one hell of a woman there man. I know for a fact that if Renee went through half of what Nikki went through, she would have been out in a blink of an eye", he said then we toast to it.
"That's why I want to give her the world man. I want to give her everything. The problem is, I know this issue with my mother is killing her but she won't tell me. She is a 'family first' kind of girl and I know having mother's consent will mean the world to her. It will to me too but what am I supposed to do when mother doesn't want to change?", I drank the remaining whiskey from my glass, ordering another one. We talked some more then went our separate ways. I decided it was best to come clean to my wife. I didn't want us to have any secrets between us. I just hoped that she wouldn't force me to make amends with mother... again.
