After I was dismissed from my interview with Deanna, I was directed down the road to two houses that sat side by side. At first I refused to take another step towards the houses until I saw Michonne through the window. I sighed before walking up and opening the door.
She turned the corner to see who had entered the beautiful, but smiled when she saw that it was only me. "Hey, how's your interview go?"
"It was okay, I suppose. Is this the house we'll be staying in?" I asked, looking around at the home. It was beautiful. It was clean. There wasn't a trace of dirt in sight. Dust was nonexistent. However, the best part was the smell. I took a deep breath before sighing at the smell of cleanliness.
"This and the one next door. Nice isn't it?" Michonne asked with a wide grin. I hadn't seen her smile this much since the prison. "Rick is wanting everyone to stay in one house tonight. Keep the group together until he's absolutely sure we're safe."
"Do you think we're safe?" I asked her as I walked around the house admiring the beauty of something so clean. I was too scared to touch anything in fear that I would dirty it.
"I want to believe we are. What do you think?"
I turned back to her with a small smile and repeated her words to her. "I want to believe we are. This is what we've always wanted, right? A safe place to really live? I think this could be it. I'm tired of constantly having to look over my shoulder."
"I am too." Michonne agreed, before deciding to change the subject. "Do you want to shower before the others get here?"
My eyes widened at her question. "There's running water?"
Michonne laughed at me before coming over and pulling my wrist to follow her. She led me upstairs and down the hall to a room. She opened the door and displayed the clean bathroom before me. I could practically jump with joy as she laughed at me.
"Carl, Rick, and Carol are checking out the other house. It's just you and me here. Go ahead, I'll bring you some clothes." She said with a wide smile. As I went to hug her, she placed a hand in front of her. "After we're both clean and don't smell like garbage."
I laughed and thanked her before shutting the door and quickly stripping of my dirty blood and mud stained clothes. I didn't bother locking the door because Michonne would be back soon with clean clothes. Instead of placing my dirty clothes in the hamper, I tossed them in the small trash can next to the toilet with a sigh.
"Bye, bye, dirty clothes." I mumbled with a grin. I took my hat off my head, realizing it needed to be washed.
As I looked up, I noticed myself in the mirror. Here I stood naked and vulnerable to my own insecurities. Never once had I thought about my looks before. I had never needed to when everything was purely based on survival. Now that I could fully see my older self standing back in front of me, I frowned slightly.
