Sam

"This is good, Sam. I knew you were a good cook because my boy always tells me about the food you make at the dorm. But dang- these cookies are so good." uncle Fred says, making me smile.

"Thank you. I've had good teachers." and it's true. Mom is an awful cook, but dad's workers always brought their wives around. A few even babysat me when I was smaller. I took advantage when they would cook and bake, standing next to them to learn how to cook and bake.

The door opened, and Russell came in with his jacket full of snow. The wind was picking up, making whistling noises outside. "Got the honey!" he says, lifting it and shaking his snow-filled hair.

He walked toward us, placing the honey on the counter and kissing my lips. I lifted a cookie, making him take a bite. "Mmh, I love your snickerdoodles. They're the best, baby," he says, making me smile.

"The best." uncle Fred says, making us chuckle. "I told you... She's a good baker, right?" Russell says to uncle Fred. "Son, you weren't kidding. These cookies are amazing," he says, taking another bit and grabbing a few cookies in hand as he grabs his mug of hot cocoa and walks out of the kitchen. "Real good," he says, sipping his hot cocoa.

"I'm going to go watch a movie in my room. Sam, you mind turnin' off the oven in half-hour, hun? The roast should be done by then in case I fall asleep. Could you guys wake me up by seven in case I do fall asleep?" he says, stuffing another cookie in his mouth.

"Will do, sir," Russ says, smiling.

"Thanks, son. Hey, I might have a guest comin' by later tonight. Y'all don't mind, do you?" he asks, pointing between us.

Russell and I look at each other and smile, nodding simultaneously, "Nope. Not at all, uncle Fred." Russell responds, making his uncle nod with a slight smirk and turning slowly. "Good..good. Y'all are gonna like my guest. She's ah... Well, she's a nice gal. I really like her." he says, making Russell smile brighter.

"Oh...it's a girl?" Russell asks, tauntingly, making uncle Fred chuckle, blushingly. "Well...yes. Her name is Laurie. I really like her, son. I know I'm old and all, but...she seems real nice. She's a friend of Kayden's girlfriend. They're out here for a few months, but if all goes well... I might have her stay longer." he says, smiling.

Kayden is around my age and has gotten so well with my uncle. They were like best friends. From the little he's told me, Kayden has always loved doing construction work and is now running his own construction company. Uncle Fred is working with him and is happy with the project they're currently doing.

Uncle Fred went to his room, leaving us in the kitchen alone. Russell wrapped his arms around my waist, pulling me in for a kiss. His hands were cold from just coming from outside. "My God, Russell, your hands are freezing," I say, making him chuckle. "Yeah, it's a little cold out today," he says sarcastically, earning a smack to the shoulder. He chuckles, squints, and then pulls me in for another kiss.
