Chapter Twenty Eight

If only CJ could fly the car, he would. He wanted to reach the hospital as soon as possible but the traffic made it difficult to happen. It took him at least thirty minutes to finally reach his destination.

He run the distance from the parking lot to the ER. He felt like as if life was sucked out of his body when he saw her lying on one of the hospital beds, still unconscious. His brother was there, attending to her.

"What happened, kuya?" He said, panting. Conan looked at him, his face impassive. Para bang banas na banas sa presensiya niya, ni hindi man lang nag-tataka na siya ang naroroon. Maybe Achill told him already but whatever.

"She passed out." He said while filling Carson's chart up. "Fatigue as I see it. I learned that she picked up extra shifts. She's working sixteen hours a day, more or less."

Para siyang nanghina sa mga narinig. He knew exactly what was happening. Ganoong-ganoon din siya magmula ng una silang mag-hiwalay ni Carson. He's been there, doing everything to be drained and exhausted just so he didn't have time to deal with the pain.

Masakit isipin na kahit pala lumayo na siya ay nasasaktan niya pa rin ang asawa. Why the hell does she love him when he's not even worthy of it? Kung pwede niya lang kunin lahat ng sakit na nararamdaman ni Carson at pasanin iyon para wala na itong maramdaman, gagawin niya. Hell, he could die for her at that very moment.

"Her blood pressure dropped, so as her sugar." Conan announced.

Only then he realized how different she was from the last time he saw her. Carson was sleeping yet she looked so tired. Ang laki ng ibinagsak ng katawan ng asawa magmula ng huli silang magkita.

"What happened?" Pareho silang natigilan ni Conan ng magsalita si Carson, bigla itong bumangon pero agad ding humiga sapu-sapo ang ulo, malamang na nahilo. Shocked registered to her face when she saw him there. Then she scanned the room and by the look on her face, she now recalls what happened earlier.

"What the fuck do you think is happening?" Conan said, he sounded so pissed with her. "Are you trying to kill yourself? Because I'm telling you, my bastard of a brother is not worth it!"

"Kuya!" Carson said in embarassment while scanning the whole room. Almost everyone is looking at them. Sinamaan niya ng tingin ang kapatid na hindi naman nito pinansin.

"You! Not unless the marriage is annuled, take care of her." Akmang ihahambalos nito sa kanya ang hawak na chart pero naka-ilag siya. Lalong napikon ang itsura ni Conan, bago muling binalingan ang asawa niya. "I already talked to Ninang Mara," tukoy nito sa CEO ng nasabing hospital. Mama iyon ni Ava at Ninang nilang magkakapatid. "You'll be in two weeks leave, effective immediately--"

"--but, kuya!"

"Or you'll be suspended."

"This is so unfair!" Maktol ni Carson, mataas na ang boses.

"Really? Tell me, when was the last time you ate a decent meal?" Hamon ng kapatid niya. Carson was taken aback, she wasn't able to answer and just fidgetted her fingers. His heart ache for more.

Umismid si Conan. "You're blood pressure dropped, you're severely dehydrated and starved. Can you even function well with the exhaustion and lack of sleep? How dare you serve your patients in that state, and you have a decency to call yourself a nurse?"

"Kuya!" Saway niya sa kapatid. He's being so harsh and not to mention, in front of so many people, he's practiculary humiliating her on purpose.

"We're talking about life here, Connor!" Sigaw sa kaniya ni Conan. He was appalled, he never saw him so mad before. "I know what you're going through, Carson. But you should learn how to separate your personal life from this job. And if you can't do that, don't you dare come back here!"
