After heading down stairs to check on Tails and Silver, he grabbed a piece of toast and left, promising he would be back to help them clean out the hut. He managed to catch up to Shadow as he reached the forest, but before he could approach him, he heard something. After moving closer, he realized it was Shadow.
And he was...singing?
Not singing per se, but more like humming. But either way, Sonic was entranced by the music.
It was a small, calm melody that reminded Sonic of the quiet emptiness of space. All the times he had been floating up there and appreciating the view. It was dark and endless, but mysterious and beautiful. It sounded just like that.
It kind of suited Shadow to be honest.
Then there was a sharp crack underneath Sonic's foot, breaking them both out of their trances. Sonic groaned quietly, "Why does this always happen at the worst time." Then, for the second time in a row today, Shadow almost took off Sonic's head, launching a chaos spear in his direction so quickly, he barely had time to react as it grazed his cheek. He felt the trickle of blood down his face as he heard Shadow curse loudly. He heard quick, fast steps approaching him, and he felt a pair of hands cup his face and gently tilt it upwards. This time, there was visible concern and guilt etched on Shadow's face as he tenderly rubbed his thumb over the cut, flinching as Sonic winced. "Stay still..." Sonic suddenly felt a warm, almost slightly burning sensation on his cheek, but it didn't hurt. After Shadow drew his hand away, Sonic's hand crept up to his face feeling for the wound, but found it had healed somehow.
Shadow seemed to know what Sonic was about to say, so he spoke first. "I used chaos energy to fix your cut, if I concentrate my energy, I can heal minor injuries on other people." Sonic blinked, "Oh. Thanks then." No more was said, and both hedgehogs began to walk down the path together. "So... what did you want to talk about earlier?"
"What?"
"You know, earlier when you threw that boulder at my window?"
Shadow made a face that Sonic couldn't comprehend any emotion from, and despite it, he still burst into laughter. He leaned on Shadow for support, who, for the record, looked slightly offended by all this. "I was coming over to check if you were ok after... what happened." His voice sounded strained, and he looked away, refusing to make any sort of eye contact. Sonic fell silent, staring at Shadow with interest, wondering what force on this earth could have possibly compelled him to bother coming to his house to "check" on him, because it wasn't like Shadow to do that.
"Hey Shadow." There was silence. "Shadow, look at me." Shadow simply continued walking. Sonic had no other choice but to grab onto Shadow, but his grip on the other's arm was quickly lost as Shadow ripped his arm out of Sonic's grip. Stepping around quickly, he planted himself in Shadow's path, blocking his way. The footsteps stopped but the silence remained. Sonic sighed.
"Shadow. Look at me. Do I look ok to you?"
Shadow lifted his head up, stared for a second, then nodded. "So there's nothing to worry about then Shads, I'm ok, I'm still alive aren't I?"
"Yeah, unfortunately. You were being an idiot." He grinned at the face of offense now plastered onto Sonic's face, when suddenly a loud beeping rang out, startling them both. Shadow immediately looked at the device on his wrist, right next to his inhibitor, listening expectantly.
"Hey, Shadow, we need you back here, we have things to do you know." Rouge's voice came forth in an amused but stern tone. "I let you go see Sonic, but now you gotta come back." Shadow quickly muttered into the device and cleared his throat, looking a little red in the face.
"I have to go now, so I'll see you later or something, got it?" Shadow turned and sped off into the surrounding forest before he got and answer, leaving Sonic standing in the dirt path.
"Okay..."
Sonic stood there for a few seconds before he felt a burst of panic. "Oh shoot, I'm supposed to help Tails and Silver!" He disappeared in a cloud of dust, leaving nothing but the trees and silence behind him.
