The citizens of Ghost City are wild with excitement when they see Xie Lian visiting with Hua Cheng following close behind, glaring at anyone who dares come too close to his husband.
Loud chatter blares from all sides as they're surrounded by the spirits and demons who are all too keen on winning the favor of their lord's husband.
"Your highness, your highness! You should try these, come try these!" One snake spirit yells among the crowd as it shows off a large vial to Xie Lian.
Another headless ghost shoves the snake spirit aside, squawking in an affronted manner. "Do you want to die?! Stop advertising that vile thing to grand-uncle!"
It reaches up to snatch the vial from the spirit and gets dodged easily. Seeing how it can't win, the ghost just turns back to Xie Lian instead.
"Here, you should try this potion instead! It helps with maternity and pregnancy! Keeps you healthy and fresh!"
"That is for the dead, you shitface!"
Xie Lian watches it all, torn between laughing and crying as the citizens fight over themselves to please him. While it's quite humorous, he doesn't really want them to keep squabbling over silly matters like this.
Disagreements aren't good, especially for these ghosts.
"Now, now, please stop fighting and calm down, everyone," Xie Lian says, waving his hands in a vain attempt to placate them.
The ghosts are too busy screaming and brawling with each other to hear Xie Lian and it makes him laugh nervously.
Just as he is about to give up, a hand smoothly winds around his waist, tugging him close against a broad chest.
Feeling the reassuring presence of Hua Cheng, it dawns on Xie Lian then that he'd been staying behind and observing quietly to allow him to bask in all the attention, admiring from afar the whole time.
Tilting his head up, Xie Lian looks up at Hua Cheng's face, making eye contact and melting into the embrace when his husband predictably sends him a sweet, loving smile.
"Need help with making those idiots behave?" Hua Cheng asks, leaning down to speak those words into his ears so that they're heard loud and clear among all the ruckus.
The chaos of the commotion is starting to get to Xie Lian. It's too hectic and ever since his pregnancy, Xie Lian has become a bit sensitive to these things. It really would be for the best if Hua Cheng asked them to quiet down a bit.
Xie Lian lets Hua Cheng know that, raising his voice so that he can hear him properly. He's aware that Hua Cheng's senses are much sharper than his as a supreme ghost king but he still tries to speak over the voices to make it easier for him to hear.
"I hope it's not too much trouble," Xie Lian adds, fretting anxiously.
"Of course not," Hua Cheng is quick to reassure him.
Saying that, he turns a furious gaze to the citizens and with a chilling voice, demands. "Scram."
Just that single word is enough to make every single one of them behave. All the ghosts are quick to scramble away, rushing to their stalls and what other business they have to attend to.
Xie Lian observes with wide eyes, never being able to stop finding it impressive that Hua Cheng can so effortlessly make such a chaotic bunch listen to him. Truly, his husband is the most brilliant to command such obedience.
"Shall we get some dumplings, gege? You mentioned you'd been craving some recently," Hua Cheng asks him.
All too happily, Xie Lian agrees. It is true—he really had been craving dumplings for a while now because of his pregnancy.
