FIRST CHAPTER

Xie Lian was tapping nervously on his notebook with his fingers, his skin feeling extra tight. His throat was too dry, too, despite the two glasses of water he had already gulped down. He couldn't drink more; it was too risky. What if he needed to use the bathroom during the meeting? Jun Wu would be pissed.

Thinking about making Jun Wu angry was enough to send him into another wave of stress.

No. He shouldn't be stressed.

But really, he should be.

This meeting was important. It could very much be a turning point in his career. Well, another turning point. In the right direction, this time.

It had been five whole years since his... Downfall, as some would say, and one whole year as Jun Wu's personal assistant. Don't get him wrong, he was very thankful for the chance his boss had given him. Back when he was head of HR, Jun Wu had always been very strict on not giving second chances. If someone did something wrong, it was over for them, no questions asked. So when it had been Xie Lian's turn to make a mistake, he had never imagined his boss would be kind enough to simply put him into customer care. Then the second... mistake happened, and instead of firing him, Jun Wu had once again been kind enough, reassuring Xie Lian that of course, he wouldn't leave him like that. He was very scared of what would happen to Xie Lian, given that he was an unmated omega, and he had told him that it was the reason he couldn't resign himself to fire him. So instead, he had offered that position as an assistant, and of course Xie Lian had agreed.

But today could be a turning point.

For the first time in many years, Xie Lian had been asked to assist Jun Wu during a meeting. He wasn't only here to sit in the corner and take some notes. Jun Wu had asked him to sit beside him and to present some of this year's numbers.

"Don't say anything else, don't answer any question. Are we clear?"

He even had requisites for him to wear a specific dress code : all white, with his hair up in a bun, and some golden jewels to "light up his eyes". He had pretended not to hear the last comment.

A small part of him was hopefully thinking that maybe Jun Wu was bringing him to test him. Maybe his « teaching lesson », as Jun Wu liked to call it, was finally over.

Today's meeting was important. They were meeting with their biggest competitor to discuss a possible fusion.

Well. Fusion had been the term on the paper, but Xie Lian knew for a fact that Jun Wu was planning on taking over the other company, without leaving any crumbs behind.

It was very much against what he liked, but he wasn't in a position to complain. He was being tested, and he wasn't going to fail!

The door opened and Xie Lian immediately stood up, only to be met with Mu Qing and Feng Xin.

Ah. He hadn't been told they'd be there. Judging by the grimaces on their faces, neither had they. Immediately, the room was filled with the angry scent of the two alphas, but Xie Lian tried to ignore it.

"Why is he here?" My Quing asked.

Xie Lian thought he heard worry in Mu Qujng's voice, despite the hateful tone he used.

"Hua Cheng is an alpha. I thought our Xie Lian would make for a good distraction."

The words didn't register immediately. Xie Lian kept his gaze fixed on his former friends, not letting a single emotion show.
