The fluorescent light from the store only barely reached the spot where Mario sat, but it was enough. Just enough. Perched on the curb, his knees folded to his chest, he fiddled with the triangular prism that he always kept in his travel bag, a gift from his friend Lucas. He texted somebody with his other hand, fiddling with the typing keys, before he settled to facetime his friends, instead of bothering with the effort of texting.
When Kay's face appeared in the Facetime Window, Mario's first thought was that she looked terribly tired. Her light auburn-brown ponytail was deteriorating, strands of hair falling to frame her face, and she had dark circles under her eyes.
"Hey, Kay," Mario said, squinting at his best friend from Highschool. "Studying hard?"
She sighed. "Chemistry is actually going to kill me. And you know I'm a positive person, Mario! I'm not kidding!"
"Not if you kill it first," a new voice said. Even though the body it belonged to was out of frame, Mario recognized the voice immediately.
"Oh, good." Mario crossed his ankles. "I hoped Xylo would be with you. I'm assuming Bryan and Jakey are their, too? I wanted to talk to all of you."
"Actually, the Boyfriends aren't here. They're off on a date." Kay told him.
Kay shifted to the left side of the Face Time Call to reveal Xylo's head sticking up in the bottom of the frame from where he sat on the floor. Mario hadn't visited Kay's dorm room in person, as the four of them lived down in Boston, but he had Messaged and Called her often enough to recognize the yellow string lights that decorated the background of his phone screen.
"What are you doing on the floor?" Mario asked, raising an eyebrow.
"Kay took the chair, and she won't let me sit on her bed anymore after I spilled chocolate sauce all over it."
Mario paused. "Chocolate sauce?"
"Long story." Kay ran a hand along her short, yet sad ponytail. "Anyways. What can we do for you, Mari Beans?"
Mario rolled his eyes at the nickname, although it held no real bite. "I just wanted to talk. You'll never guess who I just ran into." He said with a large grin, brushing the hair put of his eyes as he focused back in on his video call.
Xylo and Kay both looked at him expectantly. When Mario didn't say anything, Xylo rolled his eyes. "Well, come on!" He yelped. "Tell us who the mystery person is!"
"Well," He said, "I may or may not have bumped into a certain... Viper."
Kay gasped at the mention of her long distance boyfriend that she was freaking out about because he hadn't responded to her texts in two days, her eyes going wide and her limbs bouncing as she jumped up from her chair.
"No way!" Kay's eyebags faded as she grinned, giddy excitement all over her face. "How's he doing? He's doing well? He hasn't died? He doesn't want to break up with me or like kill me or gods forbid that he wanted to give back my Beatles Tracks! Oh gods, wait, He's not dead, Right?!!"
Xylo snickered a tad. "Kay, I don't think Mario would be this not-depressed-sounding if your boyfriend had died." Xylo said, rolling his eyes in amusement.
"Yeah. Xylo's right, he's good. Still alive and stuff. I caught him in the middle of a grocery run. Couldn't believe how many grocery bags he had hanging off his arms. I asked him why he didn't just get a cart. He said because he was lazy. Also, he broke his phone before he could text you last night. It's supposed to be fixed by tomorrow"
