David let out a breath, tucking his hair back behind his ear and looking over his shoulder at the Christmas tree that stood in the corner of his room. For the first time in years, David had a real tree in his room, and really it was all thanks to Mario. David had always felt too bad before about having a dead tree in his house for Christmas. David would have put up his fake tree if he hadn't had the Dragon Slayer as a friend to help him grow the actual tree inside his living room, but because he hadn't had a live tree since he was a kid, and he could safely acquire one now with only minimal effort, David decided to make a bigger deal of it. They'd gone out to dig up a baby pine tree together and Mario had insisted on carrying it home —he now had several cute photos of Mario and a floating, one foot tall, baby pine tree— and now that the tree had time to adjust to being in a flower pot, it was time for David to decorate.

"You know, it actually smells nice in here. for once." David smiled at Mario's teasing, getting to his feet and adjusting the lid of the dusty box that was previously in his attic before he started rifling through the boxes of decorations. He had plenty of standard decorations, pretty ornaments he bought in Atlantide and fluffed up silver tinsel, but also plenty of baubles that meant something special to him.

He still remembered how he had snuck back into his father's house one day while he was gone and stolen the bin of Christmas decorations he had made with his mother. Then, with supreme care, he had wrapped them carefully and stuck them into a box, then buried it in his favorite garden it Atlantide. He figured that one day, he could go back for them. And he had, just like he promised his eleven year old self over then years ago.

When he had opened the box, he found that he recognized so many of the decorations he hadn't seen for years. Some were hand painted, some were knick-knacks from holidays, but all of them had a story.

When David could remember, he told Mario about the stories, too. He told them about one - a red bauble with a messily painted snowman (in blue, for some strange reason) that had been a school project when he was 7. His best friend at the time had a matching one, and he briefly wondered if he still kept it.

He'd explained as many as he could (mostly adventures with his mother that Mario listened to from his spot of the couch with endless interest) before starting to hang the baubles from the branches. David began to add lights to the tree - simple, warm lights that twinkled in a simple shade of a warm whiteish yellow. He even turned the main lights off for a moment so that he could truly process how beautiful and calming the whole felt, and he let out a gentle breath as he watched.

It really brought him back. He remembered being a young child, running around the Christmas tree with a bright smile plastered on his face. He remembered hanging up ornaments, and making them, too. He remembers the smell of warm apple cider and baking cookies in the oven every day when he got home from school. He could practically taste the warm hot chocolate on his tongue, twinged with a hint of crushed up candy canes. He remembered to warm smile of his mother every time he pouted or yelled about something or went on excited rambles about how much he loved Christmas. Christmas made all his worries melt away. It felt like a big, warm hug from the entire world.

He felt another significantly smaller, warm hug when arms came around his waist and a chin barely managed to rest itself on his shoulder, a small, tired man leaning over to embrace him from behind.

"Mario?"

"Mhm."

"What are you doing, Mario?" David laughed, turning his head to the side and realising just how close Mario was to him.
