With the end of the year approaching, the Truham—Higgs sports day finally arrives. Each year, the school hosting alternates; this year, it's being held at Truham, leading all the girls at Higgs to change into their PE kits in the Higgs locker rooms before making their way across the street to Truham Grammar.
They're all wearing the same clothes, the customary PE uniform for Higgs. A pastel yellow polo shirt fitted with maroon skorts ( which Mars never knew whether to find a blessing or a curse ) and a mustard yellow jacket. Tara had ditched hers at Higgs, declaring that it was too hot whilst Darcy has hers tied around her waist, Elle's is tied over her shoulders and Marcie is wearing hers, leaving it unzipped.
Every sports day, there's two teams, the Reds and Blues. Each team competes in the different events to score points for their team. There's not really a prize for winning, but there are unspoken bragging rights for the winners. Mars and Tara are on Reds, sporting face paint —— which the majority of students partake in —— to announce their colour. Tara has mirroring red dots on her cheek bones and Marcie let Elle paint simple red flowers by the outer corner of her eyes.
Elle and Darcy are on the opposing team, blue dots in a curving line around her eyes for Darcy and a singular blue star by her eye for Elle.
"It feels like years since I was back here," Elle voices as they walk closer towards the all—boys school.
"Are you sure you want to go back to Truham?" Darcy asks, looking over. "Cause you don't have to. We could all pretend to have sprained ankles or something?"
The four of them chuckle before Tara voices an issue. "All four of us? What, did we have some sort of group ankle-related accident?"
"Okay, so I could have a sprained wrist or like a back injury or something," Darcy adds, laughing. "We can figure out the details."
"Better yet we could just. . . not turn up," Mars inserts herself into the conversation, taking her mustard jacket off her shoulders to let the wind cool her down a little from the summer heat.
"No," Elle breathes in, holding her forearms in comfort. They all stop at the entrance of the Truham school gates. "I want to do this."
