Haylie pov
I walked into my dad’s office and saw him sitting down at his desk over some papers. “Hey, what up?” I asked and sat down in front of him. He looked up and around me.
“Where’s Stiles?” I placed the bag of takeout food on the desk.
“He went over to Scott’s to study.” Lie! Scott texted everyone at school saying he had to follow Jackson somewhere because he suddenly left class looking pale. So, Stiles being Stiles had to go with.
“Right,” He grabbed the bag and pulled out his burger and ‘fries’. He took a bite then looked disgusted. “What the hell is this?”
“Veggie burger. We’re eating healthy.” I said showing him my salad.
“I asked for a hamburger.” I shrugged and took a sip of my water. “Oh what the hell is this?” He asked again opening the box he thought had fries in but actually contained carrots and celery.
“Would you just eat it please? And tell me what you found.” I said the last bit casually, but he picked up on it. He gave me a confused look.
“No. I’m not sharing confidential police work with a teenager.” I sat back in my chair taking more of my water. I looked behind him and saw a set out similar to what my mirror looked like a couple of weeks ago.
“Is that it on the board behind you?” I sat up trying to look around him.
“Don’t look at that.” I ignored him, “Haylie, avert your eyes.”
“I see arrows pointing to pictures.” I pushed him.
“Okay!” I sat back down and waited for him to continue. “We found something.” I lent forward on my chair to hear him better. “The couple and the mechanic, they allhad something in common.”
“All three?” He nodded.
“Yeah, and you know what I always say. Ones and incident, Twos coincidence, Threes a pattern.” I nodded showing I followed. “The husband, the wife and the mechanic, all the same age. All 24.”
“What about Mr Lahey? Isaacs dad isn’t anywhere near 24.” He lent forward on his desk leaning on his fore arms.
“Well we thought that A Laheys murder wasn’t connected, or B the ages were coincidence. Until I found this,” He stood up from his desk and came back with a folder that he handed to me. “This would be C. Did you know that Isaac had an older brother Cambel?” I shook my head and opened the folder.
“Died in combat.” I read out loud from the red stamp on the page.
“But if he was alive today, guess how old he would be,”
“24.” I sighed and sat back again. My dad stood up and faced the board he had made with all the connections. I put the folder back down on his desk and stood next to him. “What if same age means same class? Did you think of that?” I asked and he folded his arms.
“Yeah.” He sounded unsure. “Well I would have, I just got Laheys file 2 hours ago.” I spun to face him.
“What? Two hours! Dad people could be dying.”
“Yeah I’m well aware of that. Thank you Haylie.” I looked back to the board.
“Same class,” I breathed and within seconds my dad left the room and came back with files and a year book. I went around the desk and started looking though them. We both knew what to look for. “Okay this is it, Class of 2006?” I said unsure of the year and he nodded. I opened the file. “They all went to Beacon hills.”
