EDITED
"I have to ask you something." Dan sighed as he sat on the floor in front of Haylie.
After rehearsals she came down to the gym and even though they hadn't agreed to meet Dan had been waiting. They hadn't mentioned the fact she stood him up, even though it wasn't a date. Josh had obviously told him what happened.
They trained differently today, sparring to the point where Haylie fell to the floor with her water bottle attached to her mouth as she took deep breaths. He had pinned her to the matt countless times, but she knew she was getting better because each time it took him longer.
She stretched out her legs, for once not sure what kind of question he might have. "What do you know about Isaac Lahey." He didn't want to ask and maybe it's because she was starting to see that in his eyes that she answered.
"Not much. He's my lab partner but I don't think we've once actually worked together. Why?" It wasn't a lie she just didn't give him the whole truth. She wasn't about to reveal he had been bit.
"His dad was found dead last night. The door on his car ripped off."
She shook her head and looked down to her legs spread out, sweat coating the bare smooth skin. "I'm sorry I don't know anything about that."
When she looked back up, he was watching her, looking for deceit and considering she hadn't realised when she had averted her eyes she knew she probably gave it away. "I know Isaac is a werewolf." Her mouth popped open at that, and he sighed. "I know you know, so why did you lie?"
"You know why." She said quickly, pulled her legs into a cross as she put her bottle down. "You're going to kill him. I know what happened the other night. Gerard said no code anymore."
Dan frowned but instead of asking how she knew that he shook his head. "Haylie you don't understand."
"Yes, I do." She said quickly. "You're a werewolf hunter and he's a werewolf but do you know what else? He's also a 16-year-old kid. You have no proof it was him that killed his dad."
"How do you know he didn't." She opened her mouth but closed it again when she realised, she didn't know for sure. She didn't know Isaac well enough.
"I don't have proof that he did. Isn't it some kind of FBI code that innocent until proven guilty."
Dan laughed, taking the seriousness out of the conversation as he leant back on his hands. "That's not an FBI code, I'm pretty sure it's a universal thing." She shrugged, her point still valid. "You know that doesn't always apply with werewolves." She shrugged again and picked her bottle back up. "I was going to take you to a shooting range." Haylie froze with her lips against the bottle. "That's where I wanted to take you. It wasn't out for dinner or a movie."
"I didn't 'not' show up because I was worried about that." She confessed dropping the bottle to her lap. "Why didn't you tell anyone else about our training?" She had been dying to ask but she didn't know how and thankfully he opened up the opportunity.
He shrugged but lifted his own bottle for a few gulps of water his Adams apple working in a way that did something to Haylie's insides. "I didn't think you wanted anyone to know."
"Why did you think that?" he cocked his head at her as if to say 'don't you' and it made her laugh a little as she nodded.
"Also, I didn't want anyone to think I was training you to turn you into one of us. I know that's not what you want."
He said it so causally that she couldn't help smiling a little at it. "Thank you." She hadn't thanked him for anything before and he wondered if it meant she wouldn't always look at him like her enemy. So, he smiled back.
