ERIS
I woke up the following day in the comfort of my borrowed bed. That was my daily reminder that I wouldn't stay here forever. As I recalled last night's memories, I ran a finger over my lips. After our moment, we stayed there but came inside when it got too cold. We didn't say much to each other after that.
I got up, went into the restroom, washed my face, and rinsed my mouth. I looked at myself in the mirror and sighed. Just go downstairs and face him. Easy peasy. Nathan was already there eating cereal. He looked up at me, and I smiled awkwardly at him.
"Good morning. Would you like some?"
I nodded and headed over to grab myself a bowl. Thanks to my exploring last time, I already knew where most things were.
"We should go for some of your belongings today,"
I didn't know how to answer him. It was going to be almost impossible to hide where I live now. There was no point in hiding anymore.
"I need to find a storage room for all my things," I said, and he looked confused. "I want to start apartment hunting. I'll put my stuff in storage for now while I figure out the situation,"
"Don't bother. You can stay here for as long as you need. I'll have someone move your things here and then move them out once you're ready,"
"No, I can't. Nathan, you've done so much already. I can't take up room in your place,"
He put the bowl in the sink and shook his head.
"I have the space. I'll even help you look. I know all the good spots,"
He was leaning on the sink, and I walked toward him. I wrapped my arms around his torso, and he hugged me back. I put my head on his chest and said, "I can never thank you enough,"
He kissed my forehead, and I smiled up at him. We cleaned up after breakfast, and I went to change.
Looking through the clothes in the closet, I noticed some that seemed too small to be Nathan's. It raised the question in the back of my mind, Is there someone else in his life? How does a person like this not have a wife or kids yet? It makes me realize how very little I know of him. Indeed, it is an essential topic we should discuss.
I went back to the living room and flopped down on the couch.
"Have they called you from work?" He asked.
"I asked for a few days off to settle into a new place. I have enough in savings, so I should be fine for now,"
He nodded and grabbed my hand.
"The driver is here,"
I groaned. I had barely sat down. We headed downstairs, and I turned to face him once we were at the front.
"We won't need the driver," He looked baffled, and I pulled him to the side.
"I meant it when I said it wasn't a far walk,"
My heart was racing. I don't know why I felt so uneasy about showing him my place. I stopped when we got to the front of my building and laughed.
"Welcome!" I pointed at it, and his face dropped.
"You're telling me. You lived across the street this whole time?" He asked, and I nodded. "That justifies why you didn't require a car,"
"Come on," We went inside and headed upstairs.
I got shivers going up the stairs. The last time I was here, Darius was hurting me. I could still hear him screaming after me. For all I know, he could still be there. When I got to the door, I groaned and took the paper off the door.
"What is that?" Nathan asked.
"It's another notice. The building has a new owner, and they said we had two weeks to leave,"
I unlocked the door and walked in. Everything was the same way. My phone, coat, and shoes were all over the place. He looked around and shifted uncomfortably on his feet.
"Welcome to my tiny abode," I laughed lightly.
I turned around, and Nathan didn't say a word. Strange.
"Are you okay?" I asked.
"Is this where he was?"
He walked toward the living room. He was examining everything. He typed something on his phone and sighed.
"Yes,"
He nodded and glimpsed back at me.
"I already texted my people. They will be cautious with your things. Let's go,"
"Wait, what? I don't want strangers packing up my things,"
He walked toward me and grabbed my hands.
"Eris, I don't want you here. I don't want you around danger,"
He looked nervous. Did he think Darius was still here? I don't know why Nathan was acting suspiciously. Knowing Darius, he wouldn't be back here either way.
"I'm sorry, Nathan. These are my belongings. You already called people to help. You provided me with a place to stay. Darius won't try anything now,"
He sighed and nodded. As we waited for the movers, I packed the stuff in my bedroom. I had them work in the kitchen and living room when they arrived. Nathan didn't say anything for the rest of the time we were here. I don't know how many people he called because they completely emptied out everything else by the time I packed all the stuff in my room. It's not like I had much either way. It was unfortunate to see everything empty.
I walked over to my window and looked down at the street. People were rushing by like always. I'm going to miss trying to guess what their destinations are. We were done quickly, and I looked back at my now-empty apartment. I wiped a tear that escaped my eyes and closed the door behind me. I shouldn't even be crying. This is where Darius can come to find me. It's not safe anymore. It never was. Nathan grabbed my hand, and we went downstairs to the front desk. He stayed a few steps behind me, looking down at his phone the whole time.
"I'm here to turn in the key to my apartment," I told the lady in the front.
"Apartment number?"
"3028"
"Key,"
I handed her the key, and she snatched it from my hand. She typed away at the computer, her long nails clicking with the keys. The register opened, and she took out some cash.
"This is your last deposit. Anything that stays there from now on is not retrievable. Any questions?" She handed me the cash, and I snatched it back, mirroring her actions.
"I'm good,"
She scoffed and went back to typing on the computer. I put the money away and headed out with Nathan.
"The guys are already taking the boxes up to my place. All your furniture will be put in my storage. Do you want to keep any of it in the apartment?"
I shook my head and looked up at him. He grabbed my hand, kissed my forehead, and returned to his place.
