ERIS

"Brother?" I glimpse back at Mathew. I felt like my neck was going to break from all this looking between them.
"I swear to god, if you don't take your hands off her," Nathan enunciated as he stormed over to us. Mathew let me go, and I stepped away from him. I adjusted Elijah, who was falling asleep in my arms, to put his head on my shoulder.
"So, is this baby Elijah? Wow, I didn't recognize him," Mathew chuckled.
"Oh shit," Alana whimpered. She had water trickling down her leg, and I gasped.
"Nathan, her water broke. We have to get her to the hospital now," I said and walked over to her, stepping over the glass carefully and grabbing her hand. I led her to the elevator and looked back at the boys.
"I'm going to be an uncle," Mathew clapped. "again!"
"Over my dead body," Nathan threatened and got in his face.
"Nathan! We don't have time for this!" I shouted as Alana let out another cry of pain. He walked over to us and looked at Mathew.
"Let's go. I'm not leaving you here alone," Mathew smiled and got into the elevator with us. Alana kept wailing in pain, causing Elijah to wake up. The whole way to the hospital, Nathan was shooting death glares at Mathew as he went on about being thrilled for the baby. Once we arrived, the nurses took Alana on a gurney, and we followed closely behind her.
"Is everyone here, family?" The nurse asked.
"I wouldn't say that," Nathan mumbled.
When we arrived at the room, Alana looked at all of us, terrified.
"No, I don't want all of you in here. I don't want you looking at my.." She looked down and whispered, "vagina,"
"Someone needs to stay with you. You can't do this alone," Nathan insisted.
"Eris can help me," She said, and he shook his head.
"I can't be in the same room as him. I'll kill him," Nathan snarled, pointing at Mathew. The nurses turned to look at him, petrified.
"I'm just here to partake in one of the most joyous days in my sister's life," Mathew raised his hands up in defense.
"Whoever is staying needs to decide now. This baby is ready to come out," The doctor said from under the sheets. Alana was trying so hard to keep herself covered.
"Nathan, we have no time. I'll go with him and Elijah. You stay here-"
"Fuck no," He cut me off.
"God, Nathan, for once, stop being so adamant and listen!"Alana yelled at him. Mathew was standing in the corner, holding in his laugh. I'm glad he found this hilarious because Nathan was highly pissed off by his unannounced visit.
"If you lay a hand on her, I will-"
"Yes I know I know, You'll kill me. I've heard it before," Mathew mimicked.
"I'll be fine," I reassured Nathan and looked at Mathew. "Let's go,"
"Yes, ma'am."
"Good luck," I smiled at Alana, and she nodded.
We walked out of the room and into the waiting area. I was struggling to keep Elijah up because my arms were burning.
"You want me to carry him?"Mathew offered, and I shook my head. "You know he is my nephew,"
I scoffed, "Is he? Nathan said-"
"Nathan says a lot of bullshit. You shouldn't believe him," He shrugged. He isn't entirely wrong. A couple of days ago, I found out Nathan had lied to me about who he was.
"You didn't recognize him," I pointed out, and he sighed.
"I haven't seen him since he was born,"
"Was that by choice?"
I had set Elijah down on the seats next to me and dropped my coat over his tiny body. His facial expressions changed. I didn't say anything anymore.
"So what's the deal with you and Nathan? Single? Married? Baby momma?" Is that his way of breaking the ice? "Can I know the story now?"
"He saved me,"
He laughed, and I glared at him.
"So cheesy," He scoffed. "He saved me," He mimicked.
"You would understand if you knew the full story," I turned my attention back to the t.v.
"I asked for it,"
"I don't even know you,"
"Poliosis circumscripta," I looked at him confused, and he smiled. "You asked me about the white spot in my hair. I was born with it. I told you something about myself. Now it's your turn,"
This turned into the "Your turn" game I play with Nathan. I chuckled and said, "I'm not the type of person to throw my personal details in exchange for yours,"
He shrugged and said, "I'll learn about your life story later. Your name is Eris?" He chuckled. "Goddess of Chaos,"
That's precisely what Nathan said when he first learned my name.
"How is that the first thought that comes to mind?" I asked, and he laid his head on the back of the chair.
"A little bit of reading can help you learn extensively. You know, our parents were into greek and god mythology,"
"You remember your parents?" I asked, looking at him in shock.
"I'm the oldest. I remember everything," His jaw clenched, and his grip on the chair tightened. I opened my mouth to ask him something else, but the door slammed open, and Nathan stepped out. I couldn't read the look on his face.
"Is something wrong?" I asked in anticipation.
"I have a beautiful baby niece," He said, and I smiled.
"Did he give you a hard time?" He motioned to Mathew, who was watching the t.v., and I shook my head.
"Are you going to let me meet her?" Mathew asked without taking his eyes off the screen.
"What are you doing here?" Nathan walked over to him. This side of him was new to me. His face had pure hatred written all over it. Whatever happened between them must've been life-changing. Who deliberately gives up on having your siblings in your life? I'm intrigued.
"We need to discuss that later," Mathew said and glanced at me. "In private,"
"You need to leave. I won't repeat myself," Nathan was turning heads, and I started getting anxious.
"You made her assume I was dead all these years, and for what?" Mathew stood up and was inches away from Nathan's face. "You kept me away from my sister and nephew for years. Were you going to do the same for my niece?"
"I think we should discuss this later, away from everyone else," I said nervously. Their voices were getting louder, and I didn't want this to escalate.
"Leave," Nathan threatened.
Matthew chuckled and stepped back. "You're going to want to hear this,"
"I'll take Elijah," I stood up with him in my arms and looked at the two men who looked ready to kill each other. "Someone needs to be with Alana, and evidently, you two need to work this out,"
I headed toward Alana's room and pivoted before reaching the door. "Nathan, hear him out. He's your brother. There must be some explanation for why he came all this way."
I opened the door to the room and sighed. Let's hope they don't kill each other as soon as I go in. They both turned to look at me just before I closed Alana's door. My eyes met Nathan's, and that's when I saw it. Fear.
