ERIS
We were waiting in the lounge waiting for an update on Chris. David was pacing back and forth, not letting anyone else in the room. I was staring down at my hands, still with the dried blood, and I couldn't stop crying. I heard running down the hallway, and I didn't bother looking up. I knew they were coming and could hear them asking for us. My face was lifted, and I was met with Nathan's worried eyes. He stepped back, and I looked over at Mathew. He was examining Alana and glanced over at me. His eyes softened for a second before turning back to look at David.
"What the hell happened?"
"Drive by," David's answer was blunt.
"Why is there blood all over you?" Nathan asked. I shook my head, letting the tears stream down my cheeks.
"I should've said something. I saw her, and because of me, he's dead," He sat next to me and pulled me into a hug, unfazed by the blood.
"No," I pulled away from him, "I have his blood on my hands," I put my hands in front of his face and cried, "He stood in front of me, and they shot him!"
"You didn't pull the trigger. It's not your fault. Let's get you cleaned up," He stood up and extended his hand to me.
"I am not leaving until the doctor comes back and tells us what happened to him," I said and crossed my arms. He sighed and walked away to talk to the others.
We waited there for hours, waiting for him to get out of surgery. Nathan offered food and water, but I felt like I would throw up. The scene continued replaying in slow motion. I saw the gun stick out of the vehicle before Chris blocked my view, and I saw his face when he realized he had been shot. I was pulled out of my thoughts when I noticed the doctor walking into the room. I stood up, and I saw it on his face before he even said the words.
"I'm sorry, we did everything we could,"
My knees became weak. Nathan wrapped his arm around my waist and sat me on the chair. I didn't even know Chris until this morning. I know it was his job to protect us, but that doesn't mean I couldn't care about him. A couple of hours ago, I was joking about how he couldn't blend into the crowd, and now he's dead.
Nathan made us go home after that. I went straight to our room and avoided everyone. I lay in bed and cried for hours, thinking about the different outcomes if I had spoken up sooner. We should've left the mall. They could've been more alert, and he would've seen it coming.
What if he had family members? What if someone is waiting for him right now? They will get a devastating call stating that their loved one is never coming home. And that was my fault. If I had listened to Nathan, this would've never happened. I heard the door open, but I didn't bother turning around. The bed dipped behind me, and a strong arm wrapped around my waist.
"You have to stop blaming yourself," Nathan whispered as he kissed my shoulder. I turned around so I could look up at him.
"How? Nathan, I saw the lady. She came up to me at the store. I noticed her staring at us even when we were walking out. I could've prevented it," He pulled me into a hug, and I sighed. "I'm crying over a stranger. I know it's stupid,"
"It shows how kind-hearted you are and the compassion you have for others," He kissed my forehead. "It's one of the many things I love about you. I'm glad you're safe,"
Laying together in silence was always comforting. My head was on his chest, and his steady heartbeat was slumberous. It made me forget my problems for a moment before I was pulled back into the real world by hearing a distant thud noise coming from outside the door.
"Didn't you say you would show me something when you returned?" Nathan teased.
I buried my face into his chest and laughed. "I can't. It's too embarrassing. Alana picked out a lot of things,"
"My sister picked out the things you're going to wear while I fuck you?" I looked up at him and bit my lip. "Don't do that," He caressed it with his soft finger, and I smiled. I got up, and he tried to pull me back down.
"Let me go get my bags to show you,"
He released his grip on me, and I walked out of the room. I believe I heard him mention our bags were left in the living room. I frowned when I didn't see anything.
"Looking for these?" I spun on my heel, and Mathew held the red matching set. I felt the heat in my cheeks rise, and he chuckled.
"Hot," He extended it and nodded in approval. "Are you trying to make me go crazy?" He walked over to me, grabbed my hand, gently placed the lingerie on my palm, and closed my hand tightly. He bent down to my eye level and smirked. "Try to keep it down. Not all of us have the same privilege to satisfy or be satisfied," He let go of my hand and walked out of the room without looking back. I cleared my throat and grabbed the bags off the floor filled with the rest of my items. I quickly walked to our room, and Nathan was sitting on the bed.
"Something wrong?" He asked, looking up from his phone.
"No, let me try this on for you," I teased in a flirty voice. Well, I attempted to, and my voice came out shakier than I wanted.
I walked over to the restroom and locked the door. I gripped the edge of the counter and breathed out. Was that Mathew's way of flirting with me, or was he joking? I put the bags on the counter and looked at all the sets. I was between a maroon set and the red one Mathew was holding up. Believe it or not, it was my favorite from the rest. I quickly undressed and slipped it on. I never thought I would be wearing lingerie like this for anyone. Darius tried buying me some, but I never felt comfortable enough. Especially when he tried to force me. I closed my eyes for a second to calm my nerves, and when I opened them again, Mathew appeared behind me. He wrapped his arms around my waist and let the roam all over my body.
"Stunning," He whispered in my ear.
I gasped and closed my eyes again. This isn't real. He isn't here. When I opened my eyes again, he was gone. I needed to get him out of my head. What better way to do that than to get in bed with his brother? Yeah, no, that sounds strange. I checked myself in the mirror one last time before walking out.
"What do you think?" I asked. I made my way over to the bed and did a little turn.
"Astonishing," He pulled me into bed and pinned himself on top of me.
"You're like a goddess. Let me demonstrate how you deserve to be treated,"
