It was strange. Hyunjin was strange. I knew him as the reaper who would kill for pure excitement and hunger from what I was told, but here he was, smiling like an idiot and conversing with Thalia and me like a normal Highschool student with no care in the world. Although I was positive that it was merely an act, but it did prove that he was able to be nice.
But there were two things that were concerning me at the moment like crazy. First being that my sister had given him permission to enter our house, what made it to an not so much safe space anymore, and the second one being that he apparently was Thalia's boyfriend now.
"Thalia, can we talk for a second?" I asked, smiling and trying to stay calm ever since we sat down to eat. I didn't wanted to bring up the topic immediately when they arrived, but couldn't wait anymore when I mentioned her up in my room.
Turning up the volume of music that was played in the background while glaring at Hyunjin who probably knew exactly what I wanted to talk about, we went upstairs and I was just hoping that the background noises were preventing the vampire from hearing our conversation clearly.
"Thalia, you should really not date him" I said, the words coming out more harsh than they were supposed to.
"Oh come on Nova, just because I told you to be careful around Chan and the boys before? Hyunjin is a great guy"
"He— I mean, I met him before and..."
"And what?"
"You do know what he is?"
"What are you talking about?"
"Thalia, Hyunjin is a Vampire" I whispered, trying to get the girl to understand when she however just gave me a small laugh in return.
"Silly, I know that. I also know that you decided to leave me out of things that I had a right to know about," she stated, her smile suddenly fading when a sad and betrayed expression took over and I could just back away and listen while she continued, "Chan told us that Hyunjin and Minho came back but the fact that there already was an encounter between you — not only one but two, where you and others were in great danger, was something you should have just told me. We got into this together, Nova. You're not on your own"
I didn't knew how to respond when guilt started to slowly eat me up. She was right, I should have told her. The only thing that plagued my mind before was that others might get in danger because of my actions, but it just resulted in a way I would have never expected it. If Hyunjin wouldn't have revealed everything, Thalia would be in the greatest of dangers solely because I did not tell her anything, despite her having the full right to know what was going on for that not only we discovered that little secret of Chan and the rest together, but also because I alone would have never even get a clue on what was happening without her wild guess.
"I'm sorry ok? I really am," I finally spoke, fearing that it sounded more sarcastic than honest when I enclosed the brunette's hands in mine, "I swear I'm gonna include you in everything that happens from this point on," I promised, trying to smile at the girl who pursed her lips, "but if you know how dangerous he is, then why did you bring him here?" I asked, my need to know what her reason was, was rising with each second. I really did feel bad about what I did, but getting us out of this situation for the moment being was my priority.
No matter how bad she must have felt about things, Thalia would never be so careless and strike back with something as dangerous as this — letting a vampire in my house and knowing fully well the consequences it could carry.
"You wouldn't understand" Thalia mumbled, taking her hand out of my grasp and stepping back. This was not like I have ever witnessed her. I had never seen that bitter look in her eyes nor that saddened expression she was showing. All that providing even more reasons as to why I wanted an answer to my question.
However, my words got stuck in my throat once I noticed that we weren't alone anymore.
Hyunjin walked into the room and placed himself just mere inches behind Thalia, smiling at me when the female's shoulders dropped and a smile made its way back to her features all of a sudden. „Nova, I think you should be happy for the both of us" my friend spoke, taking the male's hand and tangling their fingers when she glanced at Hyunjin with a smile that told me enough to know that she was happy.
Happy with him.
Or maybe she just thought she was.
"You guys should come down again, the food is getting cold" Hyunjin spoke, eyes soft and smiling sweetly when Thalia pecked his cheek before rushing down the stairs — the vampire about to turn around as well when I called out to him and saw him halt in his tracks.
"Did you manipulate her?" I asked, eyes furrowed as this was the only reasonable explanation I could think of. I really loved my friend, but she sometimes was a stupid girl — especially when her mother provided her with the one thing that protected her from these mind manipulations but she saw it as unnecessary to have it with her. Wolfsbane was easy to carry around, and yet here she was, in the control of a vampire.
My suspicion only hardened when the blonde let out a sigh and turned towards me — hands in his pockets when his smiled slightly dropped.
"What do you plan?" I questioned him, my fist clenched and nails dipping into my own skin while watching Hyunjin stepping closer a bit. Not much, just one feet or two, still letting me enough space. The expression that was now drawn on his face was a new one. Neither the mischievous smirk, nor a frown or confidence glance. It was simply a natural look, his lips in a straight line and his eyes not showing what was hidden deep within the male.
"What I have planned? I wonder, maybe I'm just searching for some excitement because I'm beyond bored. Maybe I try to get on Chan's nerves. Or maybe I'm here because you interest me"
