Y/n groaned as she fell on her ass.
Jin offered to help her up, but Y/n got to her feet on her own. They had been training together for a couple weeks now, and Y/n had gotten better. Jin praised her progress. It wasn't perfect, but she was getting there. She was dripping in blood, sweat, and tears from how exhausting this training had been. Jin knocked her on her ass at least five times. How many times had she knocked him on his ass? Zero times. She was yet to beat him. Ever. Not just on that day, but ever.
"You're getting there," he said, Y/n huffing a strand of hair out of her face.
"We've been training for over an hour and you have one scratch on your precious face."
"At least you know it's precious."
He went at her again, Y/n dodging and tripping. She fell again, grunting out in both pain and frustration. This time, she accepted Jin's help. She got up and held her waist. It was throbbing from all the punches she endured. Same with her ribs. And spine. And legs. And everything else, at that point.
"Hey, you're getting better, I mean it," Jin said, but Y/n's eyes were already filled with water.
"Why doesn't it feel that way?"
"You're frustrated, and you have every right to be, but remember you're fighting someone with centuries of fighting experience and superpowers. Don't be so hard on yourself, kid. You have a lot of potential." When Y/n couldn't calm down, Jin came closer and placed his hands on her shoulders. The action consoled her, but not as much as his words did. "You're a fighter, L/n. Not once have you given up yet. Every time I've knocked you down, you've gotten right back on your feet. Don't quit on me now. It's okay to stumble and fall. That's what life is, isn't it? A series of stumbles and falls. But you can't get to the goods until you go through the bads." He gave her a soft smile. "Do you believe me?"
She stared at him. Hot, burning tears oozed out of her lids, her sniffling to attempt to hold them back. Jin was quick to wipe them away with the pads of his thumbs, and she found herself grateful for his company.
"Okay," she whispered, the word cracking as she said it. "I believe you."
"There you go. Don't let fear hold you back, you're stronger than that. You're stronger than you know. I'm sorry life hasn't been kind to you yet. I can't imagine the struggles you've gone through, and all the work you've done to get to this point."
"It feels like the world is against me," she said with a dry chuckle that only brought her more tears.
"I can't imagine. When I was young, actually young, I used to wonder why so many people around me got to live the life of their dreams. Why did they get to live their dreams while I was suffering right next to them? It isn't fair, I know." He gave her shoulder a nudge. "Jungkook tells me you're into acting. You know, I loved acting when I was your age."
"Actually my age, or my age in vampire years?"
"Both," he said with a chuckle. "I loved acting. Sometimes I wish I could still do it, but being a famous actor isn't in an immortal's best interest. Unless we find a way to out ourselves or pretend to be someone else every few decades."
"Hey, that'd be kinda iconic."
"Really?"
"Oh yeah, I can see you as an action star."
Jin softly smiled, and the longing came back. The longing in his eyes made her heart stir. Why did he look at her like she was the only thing that mattered? Her confusion must have been visible seeing as he cleared his throat and backed away from her. He whistled, and Azazel flew down, landing next to him and poking Jin's foot with his wing.
