The terrain Bravo Team had landed in was nonexistent of beauteous wildflowers and unidentifiable mushrooms. It had an abundance of prickly grass that particularly relished poking you in the legs as you sauntered through it. The soil was too parched to blossom perfumed flowers and vigorous green grass.
There was little topsoil sprinkling the ground and if there was, it was arid and rock-hard. No doubt if you were to pick a handful up in your gloved hands, it would crumble to pieces within seconds and hit the surface.
It wasn't like the cherished and cared-for gardens you sometimes see in London, England. There was no freshly trimmed grass and the remains of silage spread over the surface of the earth. And there was definitely no sign of vibrant tulips and pastel roses rising from the ground.
Maybe there had been a time when flamboyant blooms were gathered in pretty floret clusters by people at some point but not anymore. The surrounding area had been engulfed by destruction.
No compassion had been shown to the nature that once encircled the place.
The grass had been shredded and torn by incendiary explosives and cremated to grey ashes that now presently dusted the remaining verdure.
Tapering rocks had embedded themselves in the very ground where Poppy walked. She would glance down every few seconds to make sure she wouldn't step on any. Sometimes gravel would hide in the crevices in the bottom of her boots and it would become annoying to walk.
Thankfully, she had successfully avoided all shapes of stones, pebbles and rocks in her path. Grit would dig into the small gaps in the soles of her boots but she disregarded it as it wasn't infuriating her like the gravel was.
There were steep hills and lofty mountains enveloping the Bravo Team. It gave them a form of cover while not being totally flat and claustrophobic in any way. They weren't boxed in like an animal in a silver cage. It wasn't a menagerie.
Looking forward, Poppy made sure to take in her environment with keen eyes. The night vision helped immensely. It made everything clearer to see in the dark.
The smoke in the distance seemed to be infinite and wouldn't be coming to a halt any time soon. It kept floating towards the early morning sky in wide strings of ribbons.
She was glad not to be anywhere near it yet as it would result in a coughing fit that her lungs would choke on and her eyes would water too.
