Her hold on her weapon had tightened considerably as she maneuvered her way into the small bedroom on the right side of the hallway. Poppy had pushed the door ajar with the palm of her hand, resulting in the door squeaking as it displayed the whole room in front of her very eyes.
The first thing that caught her attention was the oak wooden cot pressed up against the white plastered wall opposite her. The inside was visibly padded protectively with thick yellow pastel and pink fabric. Dargie knew this as she had similar padding around the interior of Alba's cot.
The padding was specifically placed to cover the exposed wood so that babies that moved around in their sleep wouldn't injure themselves accidentally.
Stepping into the room, she let her gaze sweep around before averting her eyes back to the cot. A single bed was also in the room, along with a chest of drawers that had a switched-on lamp sitting on top of the smooth surface.
The light partially illuminated the room with the colours of soothing dawn before a pacific sunrise. The glow was like a cozy warmth that would be found engulfing a rustic cottage in the Scottish highlands.
Raising her hands, the sergeant placed her palms delicately on the rim of the cot and peered inside to see a small fluffy blanket and a toy rattle.
Someone had lived here with their baby but had fled in a rush when the cartel had come into this village and taken over, turning this small town of multistorey houses into a hideout.
"Dargie." Turning at the call of her name, she looked up to see Alejandro Vargas in the hallway, looking between herself and the cot with furrowed eyebrows. He clutched onto his weapon that was nestled to his vested chest. "Are you alright?"
"Yes." She gave him a nod and a smile as she stepped away from the cot. "Someone had a home here... with their baby."
Ghost wasn't the only one to notice Poppy's change in mood in the jeep coming to this village.
The colonel had seen a glimpse of her uneasy expression in the rearview mirror when seeing those armed cartel men around the young boy. She was noticeably unsettled by the sight of a child being in proximity to a firearm that could end a living being.
"Do you have children, hermana?" Alejandro questioned collectedly. Sister.
Poppy nodded her head in confirmation. "Yes... one."
