Christmas Eve...
Glittering white snowflakes fluttered down from the dusk sky. Unfortunately, the soft snow wouldn't stick to the ground as it had rained in the early morning. When the snow hit the ground, it just disappeared into the gelid puddles on the road and melted away to never be seen again. It didn't stop the snow from landing in her brown hair and lingering there for a while.
She had just sauntered out of Tesco with a bottle of bourbon in her left hand. Her grip was tenacious around the neck of the glass bottle, making sure it wouldn't slip from her grasp and shatter to the ground in shards of sharp glass and amber liquid. Poppy would honestly be mad if that happened, a single bottle of bourbon was extortionate.
Tucking her free hand in her coat pocket, the sergeant began making her way down the street in the direction of Simon's house. She made sure not to walk in puddles as candidly, she did not want wet socks and cold feet. She only carried her house keys, iPhone, and wallet on her as she didn't use a purse. Personally, she couldn't be bothered carrying a handbag around with her all day.
Hearing loud laughter filled with amusement and joy, Poppy craned her head to see a group of five women stumbling behind her. She came to a stop at the traffic lights and outstretched her hand. Pressing the white circular button, she lowered her arm back to her side and waited patiently for the green man to show up so she could head across the street.
The women who stopped beside her were obviously inebriated. She knew some people were aggressive when having a few glasses of alcohol but these women were bubbly with laughter. Their amused giggling echoed around the street, making Poppy smile faintly.
"Excuse me..." Turning her head, Dargie watched one of the women step towards her, the heels on her feet clicking against the concrete. She had blonde hair that had been straightened and she wore a green and red sparkly eyeshadow that made her eyes pop. "Do you know when any of the next buses are coming?"
"No, sorry." She flicked her gaze between the blonde woman's friends before returning her attention to the woman in front of her. "I can call you a taxi."
"Yes, thank you," she nodded. "That would be great, hon."
Digging out her iPhone from her warm coat pocket, Dargie proceeded to call a taxi for the group of women. She decided to wait until the taxi arrived and the group got into the vehicle before leaving and crossing the street. She picked up her pace and turned into Simon's street. A fox abruptly came out of a bush at the top of the street and looked directly at her curiously before running off into a robust garden.
