It had been one day since they let Hassan Zyani go and it was later in the evening. Halloween had risen and gone by and it was already going to be the first of November in the morning.
When Poppy headed to the barracks building, she found her way travelling down aisles of multiple beds with special forces women seated on the mattresses. Some greeted the sergeant politely as she passed them while others gave her simple glances and resumed interesting conversations with friends.
As soon as her head hit the pillow, she turned on her side and slightly brought her knees closer to her chest. Her rosy cheek grooved into the pillow as she stared ahead of her for a few seconds. She blinked as her mind wandered to the events that had taken place throughout the day.
She was enervated and felt prostrated. Her muscles were knackered from moving constantly. Her body was still getting used to rapidly moving around again and using so much vitality. She forgot how draining it was being out in the field but now she was wide awake to it.
She had been on maternity leave for a long time and her consciousness had moved everything she knew about the army to the back of her mind. It had been stored in a secure safe for later on. Her mind and body had focused entirely on her pregnancy and her baby.
Her body had adjusted and evolved perfectly to grow her daughter within her womb. It made it a safe, comfortable and temporary home for her baby to grow in for nine months. Her stomach had grown into an obvious swollen bump and her organs had shifted to make room for Alba.
Poppy vividly recalled being uncomfortably hot and having constant backache. Sometimes feeling that physical discomfort would have tears glossing her sage eyes. She felt like she was overreacting which had Kirsty reassuring her that she wasn't and that what she was experiencing happened to other pregnant women too.
In her third trimester, she had come accustomed to not having her knees risen to her chest. She couldn't sleep like a curled-up cat because of her huge bump. It had become normal for her to sleep with her legs sprawled out straight in bed as she lay on her side.
But now she could sleep in whatever position she wanted without being uncomfortable.
Expiring a drowsy breath, her chest rose and fell in synchronization with her breathing as she closed her eyes and fell into the deep abyss of restful sleep.
Tody the great dane meandered down the hallway to the living room. His paws were silent across the shiny oak floorboards while his nails skimmed the wood. He was curiously sniffing around when he heard crying.
