el: so max, wanna come over? not for long since it's a school day though. oh and only if hopper says yes!
max: i'd love that!- i mean, sure..!
"really max? nice going." max thought.
max smiles trying to hide her embarrassment.
the thought of spending more time with el made max very happy, max enjoys spending time with el, ever since the summer, they've been really good friends. after billy died, max tried to be happy. and with everyone else talking about it, she just felt like she was the problem. she feels as if she could've saved billy, pulled him away. but no, she just stood there and watched, she misses billy, somehow. but when she's around el, she feels.. almost normal. like as she didn't watch her brother die a gruesome death. which sounds crazy- but let's continue with the story.
el: hop, can max come over, please!!
hopper hesitates for a minute.
hopper: fine. will your parents be ok with it?
max: yup.
el smiles.
as soon as they arrive at hops cabin, el pulls max into her room and slams the door. el pushed max down on the bed and flops herself next to her.
the girls giggle.
el sits up, looking serious.
el: max can we talk?
max sits up and wipes her grin off her freckled face.
max: what's up..?
el: do you trust me, max?
max: of course i do, you're my best friend?
el: so you know you can talk to me, about anything.
max nods.
el: so tell me, this morning when i mentioned billy, you went all quiet. And i noticed when you're upset you always look down at your feet. are- were you upset with me?
max: no el! i mean, maybe at the moment i was upset- but not at all because of you! it's just- it's just complicated, el. i don't expect you to understand..
el puts her hand on els knee and looks into max's ocean eyes.
el: tell me.
max looks down at her legs.
el realizes that she upset max and gave her a big warm hug.
el: i'm sorry max.. i didn't mean to upset you.
max just sits there not replying or moving.
max pushes el away.
max: el, these memories haunt me, and i feel as if it's all my fault- billy dying, like i ruined my family. even though it was far from perfect in the first place, but that's not the point. . now my mom and Neil are constantly fighting. and i don't wanna return back home. ever. it's not that i don't love my mom and i know i cant leave her there with my stepdad.. he's a monster. a literal monster. he hu-
max stops talking.
max: sorry. i should stop talking.
