Block Party
Lena
Today is the day that we celebrate Granny. Its been an emotional roller coaster for my family, friends and I but we all want her to know just how loved she is and how we'll always hold her in our hearts when she's gone.
The stage was set up on our block but some ways down the street so it could still be a surprise for her.
The DJ from our local radio station is coming to set up at 9 the tables and chairs are going to be set up whenever everyone gets up this morning, the caterer's are coming at 11, Andrés and his car club are going to escort Granny to the actual party and there are other important details but right now I need all hands on deck to help me with last minute party favors.
Last night I had a movie night/sleepover in the basement with Gina, Luís, Rashad, Myles and a few other people we grew up with. I wanted everyone to be in one space so that it'd be easy to get up and go.
Everyone had their own list of things that needed to get done and we have to get on that as soon as possible.
I did a quick stretch before standing to my feet.
I jogged upstairs with my blanket still wrapped around me and went directly to the bathroom to brush my teeth and wash my face.
After rinsing my face, I dried it off with my towel and took a long look in the mirror.
I've mentioned it before but this past year has been a struggle for me. I don't think I've actually had enough time to process everything.
The days are running into each other and every time I turn around there's something else happening. I'm not mad or anything but I just need a little time to breathe.
I turned the bathroom light off and went to my room to throw some sweats and a T-shirt on before I woke everybody up.
After putting my clothes on, I had to find my portable charger just to be sure I was available for the entire day.
"Hey Lena" Gina said as she walked in my room.
"Wassup" I greeted her.
"Your phone was ringing downstairs" she said as she handed me my phone. It was Andrés.
I answered the phone and put it to my ear.
"Thank you Gina, is everyone awake?" I asked.
"Yeah, for the most part" she chuckled.
"Alright we leave in 10, thank you again" I smiled.
"No worries" she said as she went back downstairs.
Phone Conversation:
Lena: "Good morning."
Andrés: "Good morning love, I was calling to let you know that the boys and I got the cars all shined up and we're ready to roll when you give us the okay to do so"
Lena: "Thank you baby, I owe you one"
Andrés: "I'm coming over to help y'all with everything."
Lena: "I don't want you to stress, you've already done enough."
Andrés: "yeah yeah open the door for me I'm about to walk up."
End of phone conversation
I slipped my phone in my pocket and went to go unlock the front door.
"You get on my nerves" I laughed as I pulled him in for a hug.
He gave me a kiss on my cheek and stood back.
