A few days later
Luís
Today felt like the hottest day we've ever had in the history of summers. I mean, even the fan in the window wasn't helping.
I went up the block to get me some ice cream and I came back down to sit on my stoop with my feet in a bucket of ice water. The pool was full down at the rec center and I wasn't driving across town in a car with no A/C.
"Yerrr!" Myles yelled as he walked up.
"YERR!" I yelled back, "wassup my boy?"
He dapped me up.
"Nothing much, it's dummy hot today" he said as he sat down.
"Word!" I said, "I woke up with an attitude cause I thought somebody had the heater on 100."
I don't know how people live in the dessert for fun when I'm hardly making it on the east coast.
"Y'all got something to drink?"
"Yeah it's some lemonade and fruit punch in the refrigerator go help yourself" I told him.
"Don't mind if I do."
"Hey Luís!" My neighbor spoke to me.
"Hi Miss Dorsey" I smiled.
"How are you doing sweetie?"
"I'm doing good, how bout yourself?"
"I'm good, you know Denise is still single" she smirked.
This is what I be talking about.
"Oh okay"
"Alright well it was nice talking to you" she smiled, "and I'll tell Denise that we spoke."
Miss Dorsey went back in her house and I just shook my head. She's been trying to hook me up with her daughter for years and Denise is a nice girl, just not my type.
"Who was you talking to? Miss Dorsey?" Myles asked with a glass of lemonade in his hand.
"Man you know it" I laughed.
"Just tell her that you don't want her daughter because Lena is the girl of your dreams" he said.
"Here you go with this again."
"Don't act like you and Lena wasn't a thing once before."
Lena and I didn't date but we had something going on. She liked me, I liked her but she had a lot going on for herself. She had school, ambition and dreams. Since I was older than her and didn't have much going on for myself, I felt like it'd be better for her to leave me in her past and exercise her full potential.
What we had was deeper than a like but I loved her. We had friendship first and I got to know her for who she was. So of course when she left I was hurt and I didn't expect her to come back almost 3 years later.
We talked on the phone everyday, multiple times a day but it didn't feel the same. I wanted to see her physically and not just on the phone. But it wasn't about what I wanted but about what she needed.
"Yo you went to Granny's house?" I asked Myles, changing the subject.
"Yeah I went to thank her for my gift and then she wanted to feed me" he said, "I had some oxtail with some beans and rice."
"Was Lena there?"
"Nah B Granny said she left maybe an hour before I got there."
"She's probably with dude right now" I laughed to myself.
