Angels

It wasn't hard for angels to fall. There was something so delightful in wickedness. Don't get me wrong heaven was beautiful for the first thousand years, but mortal lives held something more interesting than heaven. There was something so pure about mortality and belief. Mortals are like eternal children trying to prove to their parent that they are worth something.

I haven't been in a mortal body in such a long time. As I strolled through heaven, I found myself pondering the abilities of mortals.

Faith is like hedging a bet. It is putting all your eggs in one basket, except instead of money that can be given back, it's a soul. A soul is worth so much more than cash or some worthless plan. Humans are all about love or revenge or redemption. Those are normally their motivation to find God or ask for a miracle.

Love and revenge. That was my next mission. Some little girl in the heart of Baltimore begged God for miracle in her life. She was a little thing and easily spooked. I turned to the messenger who came to deliver my assignment. I was annoyed to be dealing with such a trivial matter of a little girl and her thoughts, but the Lord demanded my presence. I looked down as I walked away from my post and through heaven. I saw her there in the cloud and the wind. She was lonely and broken. Yes, she was a fragile thing but for some reason she was important to God.

I approached the throne room and pushed the doors open a little bit. It had been a while since I talked to the big man. It had seemed like eons since I was sent to earth. My footsteps echoed as I approached the throne. I knelt which had been custom since our creation.

"Raphael here is you little brother. Ariel, did you get lost my wondering angel?" the voice of God boomed through the air. He enjoyed making jokes, especially about those who had fallen and the others who almost fell.

"I am sorry my Lord. I received your message and proceeded to wonder heaven as I looked into the troubles of this young woman."

"You are wise beyond your years, Ariel. Yes, she is deeply troubled. I have tried talking to her in dreams, even Raphael and Azrael have tried to talk to her in dreams. There was no relief for her. I am sending you down to guide her and protect her."
