As you age you take it to quarterly exams, and you know what happens when you fail an exam. Now that you are all prepared to become citizens, please sign the contracts in front of you." The Lady of Contracts and Systems stated.

A small yet strong voice in the back asked. "What about legitimate contentment?"

The Lady of Contracts and Systems laughed. "While the idea and proof has been provided, it is hard to make it last. That is why the world went to war before. War for the Pursuit of Happiness, I am sure that in your education you were taught that. Achieving true happiness is hard and unmeasurable. No one wants to be unhappy, correct?" She raised her hands as she scanned the room looking for those who might disagree, but the entire room agreed against the notion of unhappiness.

She crossed the room and walked back to the seat that the young woman occupied. Her long black silk skirt's golden hem dragging along the marble floors. The bright blue fitted blouse formed gentle wrinkles when she leant down to the girl's desk.

"What is the town's motto? What is on every document What is it girl?" She hissed through gritted teeth. Her voice as calm and cold as it was moments ago her lips were a mere inch form the child's ear.

"Say or can go to the farm with all those who thank against it. Do it. Pledge it." She grabbed her hand and stuffed the pen in between her fingers and with fire of a thousand tormented and enslaved suns she growled. "Sign it."

The girl cried out as the pen pricked and bite into the fresh flesh that mistaken tried to protect her. "United" she sobbed. Glancing once toward the Lady, she continued speaking as she signed. United we live. We are to live in peace and love. Only to live to benefit the town." She said in a broken shaky voice. Her voice almost unrecognizable to the calm and courageous one that had spoken out in the dark hall.

The lady whispered again her warning. Once she was done with her, she straightened up and pulled the wrinkles out her blouse. She proceeded to walk back to her podium where she nodded to the council of other Ladies and Lords. One gentle man handed her a wipe that he had in his pocket to remove the girl's blood from her hand.

Please sign the contracts in front of you if no one has any other questions. Orientation and brunch will begin right after you all have finished.

Chapter 1

When I was a child, I thought living in the town would be great. I was the last product of 1036 and 823. She was retiring to the village since she had already 18 other successful productions and the producer feared that her body wouldn't last another breeding season. Instead, she would retire to the village where almost all the breedies go after their breeding seasons were over. It was described by the books to be a gentle and relaxing place. Once she got too old for the village she would be sent to the farm and serve us all one last time. Until then she would raise me and teach me the rules from all the books she had. I would spend my first 16 years of live with her and learn the history and laws of the town where I would live one day if I passed the examination.
