Tonight was the night... at least it's supposed to be. The night Cordell Walker is supposed to come home but he has yet to show. Poor August is worrying himself to death, waiting for him. Stella is a bit complicated, she acts like she doesn't care if he shows up but deep down, I just know she's just as worried as her brother.

The kids, Liam, Captain James, and I were all waiting outside for Cordell to finally pull up the driveway. I still haven't met him but I wanted to wait for him, for the kids' sake. I understand what they're going through and I don't want them to face it alone.

Liam and Larry were sitting on the porch, Stella and I were sitting on the steps on the pathway that leads up to the front door, while August was standing a few feet away from us, his eyes glued to the driveway.

"Let's just go inside." Stella said, lowering her phone to look at her brother. "He's coming." August said, not taking his eyes off the driveway. "Oh, absolutely. Neither hell nor high water could keep him away." Stella said in a sarcastic tone.

"Hey, the night still young. He'll come. I bet his dying to hug you kids." I said, reassuringly and Stella scoffs, returning to scrolling on her phone. "Did he call you when he got in?" I heard James say to Liam behind us.

"You're asking if my brother checked in with me, gave me his whereabouts as well as an update on his emotional state of mind?" Liam asked. "Fair." James replied. "Does he know that his old partner is his boss now?" Liam asked.

"Mm, last time we spoke he was a little busy. Didn't seem like the right time to tell him I was getting a promotion." James said, then we heard a vehicle approaching.

Stella looks up from her phone and headlights appear, cutting through the darkness as a car drives up the driveway. "Told you he'd be here." August said to Stella, quickly looking over his shoulder at her.

I glance over at Stella to see her smiling a little bit and I smiled too. The car came to a stop and a man that didn't look like the one in the family photos jumps out of the car. "Hello, good people!" He said in a cheerful tone and Stella's smile instantly falters.

"We should've told Stan we were running late." Liam said to James. "Please. That man loves two things: being in the room where it happens and your mother's brisket." James replied as four of us stood up.

"Young dude, how you are?" Stan asked, walking up to August. "I'm good. How are you?" August said, in a disappointed tone. "Yeah?" Stan asked, taking August's hand. "Yeah." August muttered.

Stan then walks towards us. "Baby girl. Ma'am." He greeted us, tipping his hat at me. "Hey." Stella said, trying to muster up a friendly smile and I nodded, politely in acknowledgment. "How are you, sweet pea?" Stan asked Stella. "Good." Stella replied.

Stan walks pass us, towards Liam and James. "Where's the hero?" He asked. "Making history, I'm sure, Stan. Why don't you head inside? I'm sure my folks would love to share a drink with you." Liam said as August heads for the door, his head hanging low.

"Well, thank you, young Liam. Larry, hey. Always good to see you guys." Stan said as he walks past them and follows August inside. "Absolutely." James said. "Stella I..." I said, turning to her but Stella storms off inside.

Liam sighs. "If I had to guess, I'd say the lookout." He said. "Lady Bird Lake?" James asked. "Yeah, Emily and Cordell's place." Liam replied. "All right, I'll get a patrol car out there." James said, taking his phone out and Liam walks down to me

"Well I should probably go hit the hay. Your Dad needs me bright and early." I said to Liam. "Okay, thanks for staying up, (Name)." Liam said. "No problem. Maybe I'll finally meet your brother tomorrow." I said and Liam scoffs. "If he shows up this time."
