"Dad, no." I said, exasperated. "I just think you're not safe there." Dad replied and I sigh heavily, looking up towards the ceiling of the guesthouse. The day after the attack on Walker Ranch, I foolishly told my dad everything that happened. Now every time we talk on the phone, he keeps trying to convince me to come back to Chicago.
"Dad, how many times do I gotta say no for you to understand? Do I gotta say it in another language or something? I'm not leaving Austin." I said, firmly. "But what if something like this happens again? I don't feel comfortable with you being there." Dad argued.
"Well tough, I'm not leaving. The Walker family needs me and to be honest... I think I need them too." I admitted. "Really?" Dad asked, quietly. "Yeah. I've been more happy here, in just a few months... than I've been in years back in Chicago." I said, hearing it go quite on the other end.
"So honestly, you can't make me go back. Even if you came down here and tried to drag me back." I added and I heard my dad chuckle. "I guess it would be wrong of me to pull you away if that's the case." He murmured and I smiled, relieved that he finally gets it.
"Just... just please be careful." Dad pleaded. "Of course." I replied. "And see if you can get time off this summer. You can at least come back and visit your old man." Dad said and I chuckle. "Yeah, will do. But you know, since you're retired, there's nothing stopping you from coming down here to visit us. I'm sure Bonham would like that."
Especially considering Bonham has cancer. Him, Abby, and I haven't mentioned it to anyone or even to each other. I know it's not my place to reveal that sort of news, especially to the rest of his family, so I've been keeping my mouth shut.
"I love ya, Jellybean, but no way in hell. I'm not stepping on an airplane unless I absolutely have to." He said and I giggled. "Just an idea." I said, innocently, knowing full well about my father's fear of flying.
I then heard a knock at the door and look over at it to see Geri through the window. We both lock eyes and she waves to me, I wave back and held up my finger telling her, on second. She nodded and I turned away.
"Well, I better get going. And don't forget to send me Mom's apple pie recipe." I said. "It will be the first thing I do when I get home." Dad replied. "Good. I love you, Dad." I said, smiling. "I love you too, Jellybean."
I pocketed my phone and walk over to door, pulling it open. "Geri hey. Nice jacket." I said, noticing she's wearing a brown jacket I've never seen before. Geri smiles a little, looking down at it. "Thanks. It was Hoyt's."
"Well, it looks good on you." I told her and Geri raises her head. "I'm so sorry." I said, softly and she nodded. "Yeah, me too." She said, her tone clearly showing she's still emotional about what happen to Hoyt.
Geri sniffs and brushes a lock of her hair, behind her ear. "Listen um... would you like to come along on a little road trip? With me, Cordi, and the kids?" She asked. "Road trip? Where are we going? To find the Holy Grail?" I asked jokingly and Geri laughs.
"Hoyt bought a plot of land over in Tanglewood just before he got out of jail. I gotta go there and gather his personal belongings before the new owners take possession tomorrow." Geri explains and I nodded, finding it interesting that Hoyt bought some land. Guess he was serious about turning over a new leaf.
"I suggested to Cordi, we take the kids. Give 'em a new change of scenery, might do them some good. And he thought you should come along." Geri added. "Really? Are you okay with this? I wouldn't want to intrude." I said and Geri shook her head.
"No, it's find. I'd actually love it, if you come. Cordi and I..." She muttered, nervously. "Things have been a little weird and..." She said. "You could really use a third wheel that's not a teenager?" I asked and she chuckles. "I guess so." She said. "Well, then I'm in! Apparently, I'm really good at being a third wheel." I joked and Geri laughs again.
