After a night in that single room, I was determined to find somewhere else. Anywhere else. My God, that was torture.
For the whole night, all I heard was the couple in the room next to mine doing the most unspeakable of things.
Like they were literally going ham on each other.
Sighing, I walked around the city once again, thinking about my next steps. I need to get back to my reality. There is a possibility the Akademiya may have the resources I need to fix this darned chip. My fingers traced against the chip in my forearm, feeling it protrude slightly. If I go back to the Akademiya, without suspicion, I could guarantee my return home. But how am I supposed to do that? What if I get caught as a non-student or something?
I began picking at my fingers again, uncertainty looming over my thoughts before turning my attention to the back of my hand, where that man had left his mark.
Tracing it with my thumb, a fluttering feeling began to sink into my stomach. You can't be distracted by these thoughts, y/n. You don't even know the man.
"...n?" A voice buried by my introspections was heard, seemingly getting closer. "Y/n?"
Snapping out of my thoughts, I looked up.
"Aether!" I smiled, "and the floating toddler"
"Really? We're really going to do this now?" Paimon deadpanned, anger washing over her features.
A chuckle was heard from the blonde man "How are you finding Sumeru city?"
"I haven't really had time to explore, I've been running around trying to find a good place to stay until I can go back-" I paused for a second. "Go back home."
"That reminds me, where are you from? Maybe we've already been there!" Paimon excitedly interjected.
"Ohh" I chuckled, "I doubt that."
"Is it Fontaine?" Aether inquired.
Just say yes, what's the worst that could happen?
"That's right! Fontaine, I'm Fontainian, for sure."
"Fontainian?" Aether tilted his head slightly, puzzled.
"Is that what people in Fontaine call themselves?" Paimon had the exact same look on her face.
I laughed nervously. "Joke, just a joke. It's an inside joke in, um, Fontaine." I swallowed hard at my awkward words, how am I supposed to know what they call themselves? "Anyway, how are you finding the city?"
The two looked at each other, before Aether hesitantly said, "It's not what I was expecting."
"Why's that?" I asked, confused. "Did something happen?"
The pair looked at each other again before producing an awkward laugh. "We should really get going, y/n," Paimon stated softly. "It was good to catch up," Aether followed up, in a rather tense voice.
This was suspicious, but I have my own crap to deal with. As long as they're not breaking my neck, I don't care.
I hummed in response, then paused in thought. "Wait." Maybe I could ask them if they have somewhere I can stay? "I was wondering if you knew someone that had a spare room?" stepping closer and tucking my hair behind my ear and asked further, "Or perhaps, you have somewhere I can stay?"
The look of puzzlement once again presented itself on their faces.
"Don't feel pressured to help! I just don't have anywhere to go and have virtually no mora."
"We don't mind helping, right Aether?" Paimon smiled. "You could stay with us!"
Aether looked hesitant for a second. "She could." Before nodding slightly, a slight blush on his face.
"If it's not too much trouble." I grabbed his hands in mine. "Thank you Aether, you're a lifesaver! And I guess you are too Paimon."
The floating toddler smiled in pride, hands on hips. "Meet us here in a couple hours and we'll invite you over!"
