Nimbly combing through the tools I had laid out on the countertop before, I finalised my makeshift gun. It didn't fire bullets, but it did fire tiny plastic star-shaped pellets that I found in one of the many cupboards.
It had been two hours, I think, since my tearful breakdown. The remnants of blood had been cleaned and my tears had all but dried up on my face.
I brought the gun up to eye-level in front of me and placed a finger on the trigger "pew" faking a shot, I pulled the makeshift gun back as though it recoiled before smiling at my success.
After a few seconds of admiring my handiwork, I tucked the gun into my trousers and under my shirt. I can't get out of this reality, but I sure as fuck can get out of this lab.
Just as I thought this, the laboratory door clicked and opened slowly to reveal one of Dottore's trusted men.
"Hey subject. Food." The door locked behind him.
Spinning around from where I stood by the lab countertop, I took in the young man's appearance. He looked similar to the man Aether had murdered callously, yet there was something different about him.
This time he did not hold a golden staff, but a red gun with a blazing tip. The weapon expelled ash and smoke, wisping into the air and disappearing above. It glowed dangerously, fiercely. The body of the weapon was a scarlet red, reminding me of my fresh bandaged wound.
"I'm not hungry." I stated, emotionlessly. I only have one shot. If I can knock this guy out and take his gun, I could perhaps threaten Dottore with it and leave.
"You have to eat." He placed a steaming hot plate of stuffed pita down on the chair I was trapped in previously, the wisps of smoke diluting into the air, much like the ash and smoke from his fiery weapon. "I can't leave until you finish this."
"Oh? You can't?" I mocked, "Well then let me help you." Whipping out the weapon from beneath my shirt and trousers I aimed it at him and cocked it. "Give me your fucking gun or I'll take you to the land of dreams."
With my finger on the trigger, I watched in suspicion as his wide eyes nervously looked towards the door. "Hey man, I can't shoot you. Master Dottore will have my head, just come on do as I say."
"Incredible. So I could just leave right now and there would be nothing you can do about it?"
"I can still tackle you without my weapon, brat." The man took a few steps forward slowly, with his hands up. "Now, hand over your gun." he was inching forwards at a slow rate yet it felt like he was moving much too fast for me.
In sudden panic, I yelled, "Don't underestimate me!" Shaking the weapon slightly as I did. "I'll fucking shoot, I will!"
"Heh." He chuckled lowly, "I'd like to see you try" before pouncing forward, hands aiming for the gun.
Screaming in fear of messing up my only shot, I pulled the trigger with my eyes closed and stumbled slightly from the impressive recoil. "Holy shit!" Really wasn't expecting it to be that bad
My voice was buried by the scream of the man I had shot. He fell before me, with his hand dragging down my body and flopping to the ground. I opened my eyes to the sight of blood; blood on his hair, his face, my clothes. Blood on my hands.
"Oh God oh fuck I just killed a man." I panted, "I just killed somebody?!" Dropping the weapon to the floor I pushed myself away from the body and walked backwards from it.
"Nooo, no no!" this wasn't what I wanted to do I just wanted to make him unconscious not shoot him in the temple! The sharp star-shaped pellet, despite being plastic, had lodged itself into a fatal spot. I don't even know how it happened, my eyes were closed and my mind was on auto. All I could hear was his screams of pain slowly dying out as I opened them again.
Tripping over my feet, I landed on my butt and scuttled further away from the body, This can't be real, this isn't happening. I have real human blood on my hands. Never having murdered before, it was clear the previous realm I visited led me to become a pacifist.
Well, not anymore.
I shook my head and forced my breathing to steady itself. I did what I had to do, that's all. It's my life over his. I compromised. Besides he was the bad guy, I was defending myself! I had no choice! It was defence, that's all! I'm still good I just, I pushed myself to my hands and knees and crawled over to the dead body. I just made a mistake, it's okay. Don't think don't think don't think don't think-
Mind in overdrive, I grabbed the blazing weapon from the dead man's clutches and then got up. It's fine, just like Aether did. Don't feel. This is for my freedom.
