I must admit, our time together from the Akademiya to the restaurant was pleasant.
Zandik was a researcher, he was currently studying artificial intelligence and its potential. Knowing this topic like the back of my hand, I had a great time talking about its applicability in everyday life.
In fact, I even gave him a few pointers on what he can do with artificial intelligence and the best method to conduct experiments, much to his dismay.
"- And of course, you wouldn't want others stealing your findings so it's always best to keep the experiment to a localised area. This way, you'll be able to gauge the response of your participants in a controlled environment and not worry about copyright conflicts." At this point, I had comfortably begun talking to him and even had a genuine smile on my face.
I know, this isn't what I'm supposed to do. I'm supposed to be doing all I can to get the hell out of here, but, maybe this is the best thing I can do? Besides, he is a researcher for a topic that I know well, and if I'm able to befriend him he could potentially allow me to join him in his lab one day.
That's enough of a chance for me to fix my transportation device chip.
Zandik pressed his palm to the small of my back gently, beckoning me into the restaurant, "I wouldn't dream of letting anyone take credit for what is mine."
He had made his way to a table in the corner of the restaurant and pulled out a chair for me to sit in.
Feeling somewhat giddy for once, I allowed myself to sit and be pushed in. "Thank you."
As he himself sat down opposite me, I began once again. "So what artificial intelligence device are you working on right now?"
He smirked, "So inquisitive."
"Sorry, I don't mean to pry. It's just, I love talking about this sort of stuff."
Silence took over as he pondered his next choice of words. "As I said, my current aim is to understand its potential. Using tools and willing participants, I've been able to create a secret device."
"Oh? You've piqued my interest." Sitting upright in my chair, I grinned at his response, "Personally, I wouldn't have mentioned it was a secret."
"What would you have said?" He rested his chin against his knuckles, a smile caressing his features.
"I guess I would have just said it's classified." I picked up the white silk folded napkin that lay underneath the cutlery to my left, opened it and placed it on my lap, as I did I began to speak in a more gentle tone than before. "I have a question, if this is also classified, you don't need to say anything. But it's been bugging me ever since I first saw you."
His finger had been paging through the menu, humming absentmindedly as I spoke.
"Why do you wear a mask? It doesn't look like the ones you wear in a hazard room, so I'm just..." I placed my hands on the table and looked at him. "You really don't have to tell me I'm just nosy."
