Last night was a total blur.
I learnt one thing.
Elexis is not safe on her own.Cassy decided not to stay, she went home late during the night... I don't remember much but I'm guessing she went on a detour to Kyles first, she mumbled something about 'thanking him'. I don't know, she seemed a little dazed. I lay on this chilled tent floor, Elexis silently sleeping beside me. I leaned on my elbow and faced her, I stroked her hair, letting brown strands slip through my fingers. I will never let anything happen to her, I promised myself. Never. She wriggled and turned towards me nestling into my body. She sent shivers running up my spine as her warm breath lingered on my chest. This morning was so peaceful, the sun had yet to leak through the thick and the birds chirped as they sang to me. They seemed so happy and cheerful, a smile spread across my face. I too, was finally happy again.
Last night really startled me and the quick recovery was thanks to Cassy-Kay.
Boy do we owe her an apology!
I noticed yesterday a real connection between her and Elexis form. Right in front of my eyes I never thought I would live to see the day they hugged. She really gained Elexis's trust and respect. Today I planned on discovering how Cassy got here in the first place, we were all too exhausted to question anything.Lexi stirred and finally her sweet morning voice enlightened me, "what time is it Dyl?" I tilted her head up to mine, "not sure but there's no rush." I gave a her a light kiss before getting up. It was a slow start to the day but we eventually got packed up and set to start our way back to Elexis's house.
Her house emerged through the scrub that eventually thinned out, we couldn't spot her mothers car so we assumed she was out. I asked Elexis about Cassy but she didn't know herself. I trust her 100% and there's no reason for her to lie, yet I had the feeling that she was hiding something. We dumped the bags outside on the front veranda and headed inside.
"The doors unlocked?" It sounded more like a question rather than a statement to me, before walking in she glanced around.
"Wait," I grabbed her arm, "let me go first."
She scrunched her face, "no! I know what your thinking Dylan! You're wrong!" She jerked her arm back leaving me behind in the doorway. I heard Elexis call out over and over, "MUM!" I followed her shaky voice and met her in the kitchen. She was leaning over the sink, the sound of tears fell into the new found silence. The hollow sound of foot steps came behind me, I ran over to Elexis blocking her behind me. We waited for what felt like minutes for the expecting Zeus to pop around the corner. A few more footsteps, light and subtle...
Huh?! What's going on?!"Elexis? Dylan?" Elexis's mother, Annah, stared blankly at us, she cocked her head while her weary eyes focused on the figure barricaded behind me. I looked to my sides realising my hands where spread across the bench edge, Elexis in between.
"Oh I um," I cleared my throat, perhaps a little too loudly making the situation even more awkward. I pulled my arms in and took a step to my right dragging my foot along creating a slow painful scraping sound. I looked at Elexis: Help me out!
Her eyes widened and immediately responded with a very conspicuous nod and smile. Her eyes diverted to her suspicious mother, "SURPRISE! WE'RE BACKK!"
Wow... Just wow."Um Elexis, first of all, you were meant to be back today, second you almost gave me a heart attack! That calling out was unnecessary. What were you thinking?!"
Looking at me she found her words, "well, the car was out so I assumed you-"
"The cars getting serviced," she pouted her lips and crossed her arms while dipping her chin.
"Well then, haha silly me!" She ran over and hugged her mum knocking her back a few paces due to the impact. Freaking control your strength woman!
"So what have you been upto since we where away? Anything I missed out on? How's your job? Oh that's right you went out for tea, how was it? Anything unusual happ-"
Annah let out a laugh and beckoned for us to sit down at the table, "well give me a chance to answer," she laughed. We took a seat across the table from her and talked about the 'hotel' experience.
"No seriously, the service was really good! There were so many levels too, we got heaps of exercise. Which haha, we needed after abusing all those buffet," she gestured wildly outlining a non-existing hotel shape. "The best hotel I have ever been to mum, thanks so much for letting me go."
Great my turn. I blended some experiences at camping and soon made up some quick and easy crap about how I tripped and hurt my elbow and knee. We continued to rave on about how much fun it was.
It was only till Elexis mentioned the weather when I realised we dumped all our camping gear RIGHT OUTSIDE THE FRONT DOOR...
